Weekend Discussion

I don't watch a lot of television, I mostly catch up on shows after they've been released on DVD so I can watch it at my own pace. I tend to hate the anticipation for the "what happens next" part of shows. It's not the fact that I need to know, it's just that the "urgency" of it just rings so false to me that I become apathetic to its purpose. Maybe it stems from my love of the old Adam West/Burt Ward Batman as a kid. "Will Batman and Robin escape this impossible situation?" the voice-over would ask every other week. "Yes. Always. He's Batman," I eventually realized. At least back in the day they were nice enough to have fun with the fact that the urgency was so fake.

One of my favorite, action-based shows--as a fan of all things military--was The Unit. Sadly, the show was canceled after its fourth season and it didn't get a proper send off. To compensate, I'm reading Inside Delta Force by Eric L. Haney. The series was based on the book. Although it won't tell me what happens to Snake Doc and his team, it will help fill that void left by the real urgency of a series that will never see an ending.

  • Garnett Lee: After being talked back into World of Warcraft, I'll be playing my Worgen warrior some more. I also will be continuing my effort to see Red Dead Redemption through to the end before the New Year arrives and maybe a little Bad Company 2 or Black Ops online here or there.
  • Xav de Matos: After a week that involved either being in bed due to illness or sitting in front of my computer due to employment-ness (not a real word), I'm spending my free time either outside with loved ones or with a few books that have been collecting dust on my desk.
  • Jeff Mattas: I'll be playing some Epic Mickey and Donkey Kong Country, while scanning the sky for flying pigs because I can't believe there are actually TWO new Wii games I'm interested in checking out.
  • Ozzie Mejia: [Finals.]

      No Rules Survival!

      No Rules, No Mods, No Kits, No Ops, No Cheating, just ... SURVIVAL! Animals, Monsters, PVP, Fire , Lava, Water. Everything is enabled. The only thing protected on this server is the spawn chunk, and the only command you have is /home, which takes you back there. It's up to you to decide where to live or die. Griefing is just part of the gameplay, so if you live near spawn you'd better be fortified, booby trapped, or hidden! If you live further out, be prepared for a long trip past roving murderers and night-time hordes of the undead. It's a rough world out there. Just what will you do to survive?


      We could go kill people, set traps, raid their houses, etc. I've got a base started, not exactly sure where, somewhere NW of spawn.

        About 12 players online right now, and sometimes it fills up (25). So it's a fairly active server.

        /getpos is disabled, but I guess there is a map mod that has coordinates on it. Kinda lame that a client mod gets around the server setting, but I saw other people using coordinates, so guess we need to.

        I gotta go for awhile, later I'll get the coordinates of my cave and we can meet up. I've got a stack of iron, so we can make armor and tools. Started doing some branch mining, not much luck on diamonds yet, just found enough for a pick.

              Maybe it should only be available through a crafted item, not just typed into the chat and a result is given.

                Co-ordinates are only powerful if you actually know what is at other co-ordinates, though. If people build their base right and hide it I can't see what the problem would be.

        UPDATE -- So yeah, the shack has pretty much invaded this server. We have created a group called the Creeper Mafia and have pillaged and destroyed over 9 houses this night. Most of the residents now pay us dayly dues of 5 pork in order for their safety.

          i don't get how it's already going into beta, but there still isn't a game there yet. i think notch has some great ideas but too little focus. the boo update was a waste of effort and most of that shit still doesn't even work but he's forging ahead with other grand ideas.

          99% of the fun is really just seeing a newly generated world after that it gets stale so fast.

            yah I can't believe he is putting it into Beta already either... yah I have the most fun right at the beginning when you start a new world and explore and try to survive the first few days.

            After that I just don't have a huge desire to build big stuff anymore. I thought about trying to start a town or city but with so few people on it would be a chore to try to build it myself.

            Also its just isn't very challenging after you get Armor and good weapons... I think it needs another ~2-3 months before I'd put it into Beta.

            Notch has always said that Beta would occur when SMP and SSP were at feature parity. When server-side inventory and Hell are added in, it's pretty much there. And he's said that server-side inventory is done, and will be delivered before the Beta drops.

            I dunno, I have a blast playing with other people, even after things have settled. The problem is that everyone gets so spread out that unless you build right next to someone, or work on a project with them (or a larger group), you never see anyone.

      i wish i could use food on the actionbar by just pressing a keystroke. maybe something like alt+number which would do the same thing as switching to it and then pressing the right mouse button. then you could be fighting a mob and pop some food without having to switch away from your sword

      Tonight I improved the Station in my town, specifically the arrival part. The track now ends in a section of water 1 block wise and 7 blocks long. This allows you time to get out and prevent your getting out from pushing the cart around, as could happen with my previous design. The water will push the cart forward slowly, eventually onto a track where two boosters will push it up to the cart stack of carts waiting to be used to leave.

      Also, tonight I made a simple Y where the track coming north from PanoraMajor meats the East-West track going to Penis Island 2. If you are traveling East toward Penis Island 2, you will continue going East, and be boosted. If coming West, from Penis Island, you will be directed South to PanoraMajor, being boosted in the process. If coming North from PanoraMajor, you well be boosted and directed West, toward Brickton Ruins, Lamperia, WatchWorld, and the Three Way Automatic switch. There are also now stairs to get up to the track at this point.

      I had the most fun I've ever had with minecraft today on the No-Rules server. 5 Shackers vs the rest of the server... seems like we pretty much run the show, except for Griz, but we'll find him and his buddies soon! I think we should talk seriously about making the foo server like this.

            No, it has Towny, and it doesn't have 25 players on it.

            I really don't think we have enough people interested in PVP to run our own PVP server. It's *much* more fun killing random non-Shackers than trying to deal with the drama that we had.

        also i have a new opinion: i don't think you should be able to change the difficulty on single player. i could've just hit escape and set the difficulty to peaceful and those dudes would all disappear instantly. it's too tempting. once you set your game to Hard, that should be it

            Yup. I switch it to Peaceful at night when I'm mining or building, until I have the resources to actually fight off creepers. Then I occasionally switch it from Normal to Peaceful and then back to clear the creepers off my doorstep and the spiders off my roof.
            If you play on Peaceful, you'd better be straight-up building or harvesting. Playing the whole game on Peaceful is like beating Super Mario Bros. while you're GameSharked for invincibility.

            tl;dr - Peaceful keeps 'em from spawning, but also deletes any hostiles.

              this would be like if you made a solitaire game and optionally you could right-click on any face-down card and it would tell you what the card is. that is a user option and no, you don't have to do it, but it would utterly destroy the point of the game. do you see what i mean?

              It should be a 'hardcore' option, that blocks changing the difficulty.

              Sometimes I'm testing stuff, so being able to control monster spawns helps.

                i think, at the least, it should operate the way kelbane suggested. it would prevent new mobs from spawning but existing ones would not be despawned

                  That would make sense, but whenever I think about shit in Minecraft I come back to "it's in alpha..."

                  Who knows what the final game will look like, but when it's done, I sure as hell would hope he leaves the difficulty options present.

                  Actually, what'd be really awesome is if he gave you a fuckton of options when making a new world (or even playing normally, since it generates new stuff as you explore), like the old game "Dungeon Hack", which featured just a whole shitload of cool options to randomly generate the kind of dungeons you wanted.

      In summary:

      You don't have access to any teleports.

      -New map: Desert Heat!
      The map is entirely desert. Dirt is very rare, trees even moreso. But they do exist! Can you survive in this harsh wasteland?

      New feature: Starvation!

      Animals disabled to make finding food hard, monsters disabled because I dislike monsters after all. You can still get string from dungeons to make bows!


      Wow. I don't know, might be too damn hard! We'd really need to team up.

        Meh, this one kinda sucks.

        Not so much for all the rules, but because they won't add Death Notify, so I can't tell when PVP is happening. Makes it boring, and I like to know who is a 'PKer' and who is a 'victim' heh.

        I found a cave and got some diamonds and gold, but I don't think I'll continue.

        Other server is hard to get into, though.

        If you shackers enjoy this so much, why dont you park your usual map on MercFox or shadowdane and spent a bloody christmas with a pure, plain-vanilla server with no heymod and no nothing? Come back to your routine in January...

              I look forward to much larger Minecraft threads then. Even the limited PvP we had on foo1 was a source of huuuuuge amounts of drama.

                Mostly because everyone didn't agree to it. If we had a server that was just straight up "play the game with the rules built into the game", I think it'd be fine.

            My Spidey sense is tingling...

            You may say 'griefing', but it's not like they weren't fighting back. The only reason their bases get blown up or burned is because they build them close to spawn, or made out of wood. If they were smarter then they wouldn't get 'griefed'.

            It is a fun PVP server, because it's active, and everyone is fair game. If we had a Shack server full of PVPers then I'd play, but I don't think we can get that many right now. Maybe once the game is more complete then more people will be interested in PVP?

              It wasn't griefing, it was actual war. We went to towns, demanded payment (5 food) or we killed them. Then we watched spawn for a while, and killed a few jerks that were REALLY griefing. We looted, and set traps. Hell, we had to avoid everyone else's traps, which was the fun part! Perhaps when the game is more complete, people will come back to mercfox. I know I've spent a LOT of time on both servers, so you know how much I love it, but I haven't killed anyone on there in weeks. I just want to kill people sometimes! or attack and defend! ya know? can't blame a guy! It's easier to kill a non-shacker anyways I guess, but when the rules are finanlized I'll come back to merc again! :)

                  Of course it won't, because everyone already has a bunch of buildings and is attached to them.

                  If we had a real "no rules" server (not m0rfus', as it has towny), no one would have time to get attached to things, and people wouldn't be building these sprawling, insane constructions, because they'd know what was coming.

                    This has nothing to do with the running of the server and everything to do with a buggy as fuck game. I was and still am more than happy just building shit and seeing other people's creations. Unfortunately, multiple crashes and reloads, griefing and failed new features were enough to put me off it for a while, as well as many others, apparently.

      Creeper Gang: Ramasule, Goblin, Nixx, Hemotoxin, et al. I paid 6 diamonds for the location of Grizdale. I paid the informant double, because his gang are allies with Griz and the rest. He said we could do anything we liked, as long as we don't mention his name. I gave him my word we would not destroy anything that wasn't necessary. He said they are "fucking loaded" at their city, and it's ready for loot! Let me know if you guys can get on tonight, otherwise, in a few hours, I'm gonna assassinate Griz in his own town and bring some goods back home!

        Also had to mention... there IS a way to make a one-way or non-public warp. Someone was explaining it... it's in the hey0 stargate mod stuff I think?

      After trying a few other servers, I've decided/learned some things.

      We'll never make everyone happy with one server.

      PVP is the most fun with few rules/mods. Having things like Towny, iConomy, quests, and so on are kinda neat, but they get in the way of the action.

      PVP server should be only PVP, nobody safe from attack.

      Everyone really needs to be on Teamspeak for PVP. Typing is too slow heh.

        It really got my adrenaline flowing sometimes! When it's pure PVP you really risk it all sometimes! Reminds me a LOT of Defcon (one of my favorite games.) We used to play diplomatic mode, and I'd talk everyone into killing each other and win the game never firing a nuke! We shackers can do anything as long as we keep moving and stick together. So much fun! Looks like our roving gang of marauders is about up to 10 people...

        I'm gonna try and post a rough map of the area... I don't have much to go on, but at least we'll know where they've been keeping their loot.

        We have a new group of enemies though. I was ambushed earlier today :/

      I worked on the track on foo1 tonight. The track now extends to the viewing area of penis island and there is a station at the base of the glass stairs of the viewing area.

      Vividvoid added some boosters at the Lamperia station, but I think they need to be redesigned a bit so that you slope down to the booster like the ones at brickton station, instead of having a hill before the booster.


      The path coming back from Penis Island currently takes you to PanoraMajor, which is a bit of an issue as there isn't a station there yet. The track just ends. I'd build a station but I don't have build rights, and I'm basically out of track (I'll have to dig up some more iron).


      The Station at penis island is a rather simple one (I like trying out different designs), but it will always stop you, re-starting again just requires pressing a button (but that make take more than one try due to timing), and starting from there initially just requires and empty cart (there isn't a cart stack or anything like that). If people want, I can make it a more complex setup, or add something like waiting carts that you can dispense by pressing a button. Hmm.... I think I just thought of a way to make the button to launch you more reliable (by adding a delay into the circuit so the circuit is on longer when the button is pressed).
