  • I find it funny how most podcast host favor Halo's multiplayer over CoD's claiming it's a less intimidating experience for a newbie. I think it's the opposite. If anything Halo's multiplayer requires more skills and a better understanding of its game mechanics than CoDs. In Reach you usually can't kill someone by just shooting at them (unless your playing SWAT.) You first have to bring down their shields wich, in my opinion, takes way too many shots. In COD if you shoot someone they usually die before you have to reload. I think Halo's "shield" mechanic makes the game way too complex for the casual gamer to jump in and enjoy. And on top of that I feel the game's net code isn't as good as CoDs. While playing Reach many times did I feal like lag was heavily influencing my performance. I hardly ever get this fealing in CoD's multiplayer. Anyway, I see Reach is not at the top of Live's multiplayer list. Both MW2 and Black Ops are played more. I think Halo's multiplayer might need a little re-tooling. If it wasn't such a pain in the ass to bring down shields I think many more people would still be playing Halo over CoD. Just my 2 cents.

    • I agree with you that Halo is less accessible than COD. It's much harder to get lucky and get a good run of kills in Halo than it is in COD, simply because COD is generally a matter of 'first person to see the other guy and shoot, wins'.

Halo fire-fights have longer, more dramatic, back-and-forth fire-fights. There's more skill involved in winning, because even if you initiate the confrontation, a good player that makes use of their weapons, environment, and now Armor Abilities, can end up winning the battle. That's really frustrating to people who want instant gratification of a kill immediately after pulling the trigger.

That said, I don't think dumbing down the gameplay mechanics that separate Halo from the pack is a good strategy. Halo will never be as fast as COD, even in modes like SWAT. So why try and go that route, and just come up feeling like a weird COD wannabe? I say keep the features that set Halo apart from the pack.

It could just be that after a long run - five years of which Halo was basically the ONLY online FPS anyone was playing - some of the casual fans have gotten a little bored with Halo. You have to remember that COD, as we know it, has been around for less than four years (COD4 hit in 2007). Halo has been around for almost 10!
