Shack PSA: Weekend PC Digital Distribution Deals and Discounts

17
PC game digital distributors aren't offering any blockbuster deals this weekend, as they often do, falling back mostly on re-runs of deals you've already seen, but there are a fair few opportunities to pick up some older games which you might not have been interested in at full price but discounted, you might be tempted to have a swing.

The selection of discounted oft-maligned games--I offer no comment on whether the judgements are just or not--include Shadowrun for 99¢ today only, Mercenaries 2: World in Flames for $3.99, Mirror's Edge for $6.78 and The Saboteur for $10.18.

If you want games which are undisputedly ace, though, you can get the X-Com Complete Pack for $5, if you haven't already, Green Man Gaming has a few good bundles and EA offers 50% off a good selection of games if you buy two. Our selection of the weekend's deals follows below. Unusually, there's no Steam deal this weekend.

Electronic Arts

Buy 2 or more games, get 50% off on select titles. These include Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age: Origins - Ultimate Edition, Dead Space, Spore, The Sims 3 and stacks more.

I don't know anything about the PC port (if I recall it was kind of terrible), but Mercs 2 is probably worth the 4 bucks.

i dunno... i was pretty unhappy with it. id rather have just cause 2 at full price than piss 4 dollars down a hole with mercs 2.

Yeah, Just Cause 2 was much better. I own both.

Single player is mediocre. The hijacking controls use symbols instead of keys, so that's a pain. The driving is floaty and anything less than a tank feels totally flimsy. On the plus side, using a helicopter winch to pick up a vehicle and drop it on enemies is good times. Calling in artillery and air strikes is cool. But the most dangerous (and fun) weapon you can deploy is a co-op partner. I landed a friend on an oil rig in my attack chopper, then took off to cover him from the air. Before I'd even turned back around to face the thing, it was going down. Apparently he'd figured out just the right place to put the C-4. :P

So the fuel tanks are exploding. The gigantic rig is sinking. And my friend has nowhere to escape to. I fly in through the explosions; he grapples on to my helicopter, and we fly away like the end of Bionic Commando.

To this day, every time I remember that Just Cause 2 has no co-op it makes me sad. Why do you build the world's greatest playground and then only let one kid at a time play in it? That's just mean.

Unfortunately, I think EA took down the matchmaking for the PC version (and maybe all versions). teknogods.com has a fake matchmaking server you can run, if you're willing to jump through some hoops.

Mercs 2? You mean "Airstrikes 2: Hooray for Airstrikes"*? I bought it in the el cheapo bin and I really enjoyed it for the few bucks I spent on it. I'd say it's definitely worth $4.00. It's no Just Cause 2, but Just Cause 2 isn't $4.00.

No, but Just Cause 2 was like 6 dollars in the ten pack deal on Steams thanksgiving sale. The redeeming quality of Mercs 2 is the co op though. I hope they get it into Just Cause 3.

co-op no longer works on the PC, EA shut down the co-op function.
