Rift Trailer Promises "Polished at Launch" MMORPG

This new trailer for Trion Worlds' upcoming "complete" MMORPG Rift, which the developers promise will be "polished at launch" and "advance the genre the day it ships," is full of bold claims.

The trailer opens with some testimonials from members various guilds that have been playing the game talking about how awesome it is, which is followed up by some voiceover detailing what you can expect from Rift.

Time will tell if the game will be a hit, but it looks like it has a good foundation. If you're more curious, you can read my preview from when I saw a build back in October.

I remember some guys in high school playing a pen and paper RPG called Rifts (I think that's what it was called). I wonder if this is based on that? I remember looking through the book and it has some cool stuff in there.

The big problem is that promises like this create heigh expectations, if there is just one little hickup or issue during launch - may it be server queues, account creation or simply not enough mid and end content - people will go into internet forum rage mode.

It still plays like WoW though. Wait for attack, push attack button, and depend on the dice.

All that rift stuff just sounds like a funky way of saying "respawning enemies."

Why does every MMO claim they're doing something new and revolutionary? I see nothing new here. It looks like they took some of the story from Horizons, mixed it with the classless skill system of Asheron's Call, and gave it better graphics.

Looks interesting, but WOW broke the mmo model. Not game will ever be considered successful again, and prying away millions of n00b gamers from WOW to try another mmo is almost impossible. When they quit WOW they will never pick up another mmo, they'll just go back to solitaire and Farmville.

The Beta is pretty awesome so far. I saw a few people talking in general chat about not enough spawns and 2 hours later they are shutting down the servers to do a small update and fix it so we have more respawns.

Well... the bad:

Rift was the only game at E3 that caused me to stop and want to play it.

These rifts open up spawning random bad guys on random parts of the world, you kill stuff. But I didn't really get what the bigger picture was. Are there quests other than just finding rifts and killing things?

After the live demo I left their booth feeling, meh.

It is a pretty game though.

It's this kind of hype and promises which kills this type of game, good or not. It's a near impossible thing to live up to hype in the MMO world these days. Warhammer comes to mind.

Looks awesome. The hub bub is that it's the real spiritual successor to EQII/Vanguard type of gameplay but without the problems that plagued both of those titles.
