Morning Discussion: Thanksgiving Edition

Good morning, Internet! A very merry Thanksgiving to you all. Especially to everyone who isn't in the USA and, as such, will be working today. To mark the occasion, we have some seasonal features lined up for your reading pleasure.

We also get to see again what happens when I'm the only person behind the news desk. I would like to pretend it'll wild and exciting today but in reality, today will be very slow and quite dull as everything has shut down in concession to the USA and I don't particularly want to get scolded for misbehaving on the Internet--a very serious crime.

        It's obviously fake but holy shit that would scare the crap out of me if that ever happened in the game. It would be kind of cool if one out of 100 zombies is a day-walking, 5x speed, screaming, kamikaze zombie.

            well there is the thing near spawn cant open the doors because they are in spawn and only ops can change spawn chunk doors could be moved out of that i think? then again you can use the /towny map or /towny map toggle to see what areas are towns should tell oyu what town your in too i think?

              I hardly think that people should have to learn 400 random commands to play a game, is what I'm saying. Half the beauty of Minecraft is in its simplicity.

                but it isnt needed i do like the thought of towny may be the only way to attract some of the builders from shackeast.and its hardly 14 commands for hte basic user.

                    but if setup right and towns only creatable by admins it is basicaly optional to join a town and yes it is quirky but thats what makes it interesting

                      If you use Merc1 as a model, we tend to have several hundred "towns of 1" or sometimes 2 people. They'll all want an area setup that is 'theirs' that they can control the building privileges/PvP rights in. This seems a little untenable.

                        basicaly think of portthong or lampoplis as towns people would join the area that town can build would be large with more people the towns need to be founded by the admins/mods not by players with out admin control of it the land grab would be horrible.

                          and on that note it is something that is going to need structure to be done right its interesting but not absolutly needed for great play just a bit of spice in the soup. im off to get some sleep now ttyl guys

                          I know what the point of the mod is. It's to build 'superstructures' like Duke City or Port Thong on the old server, with many residents inhabiting them. I'm saying that's not how people tend to build on Merc1. Granted, it may be different when mobs are active.

                          I think if we do end up using Towny, it will be in a very limited fashion, using 'nations' to tie together a large area where, say, people would like to only build with no PvP. I just think that it's a complex solution to a simple problem -- and the simplest answer is multiple servers, not a convoluted mod.

                        Yes, if it was handled correctly... it could be really nice. Some kind of GUI overlay would make a world of difference on a mod like this. I hope this type of thing is supported eventually when Notch adds the mod support.

                    I agree. What towny can do really isn't much different than what the players themselves can do. If you want to build a town, just ask around for help or who wants to join you in creating it etc etc. You can still pvp other nations/towns easily. Towny really just is too confusing.

            Vivid and I were testing out some of the nation/ally Towny stuff yesterday. So yeah I say we just use the test server to test Towny's capabilities and get familiar with it.

          It is a little bit frustrating when you come into the world for the first time and you can't build anywhere because it's all reserved already. But I guess that's how it will be when areas can't be flagged as property anyways.

          Given that most of the people in yesterday's thread seemed to want PvE only, this implies that either they're all gonna have to learn it, or we (as admins) are going to have to explore an entire continent or 2 and mark them 'PvE only' nations. If I understand Towny right.

        I will be adding something like a no-health-at-all or heal-over-time setting. The death/invis bug is getting fixed, too.

        Based on his twitter I'm not sure if anyone has reported the invisible creeper issue to him. I'll try to catch him if I see him posting. Dude really needs a public bug submission/ranking system.

        It does, which makes my TNT server a bit more dangerous. I know notch was going to implement options for regenerating health or no damage at all, but I don't think it was in this last update.

      Proposed PVP server rules
      Players must add a band to their arm to signify what kingdome they belong to.
      Players who do not with to pvp but to build wear white.
      Kingdome that are pvp add a P to the end, example VividsShitholeKingdome_P
      Kingdomes that are build add a B to the end, example Funkyshaps_B
      You may not kill another player in a build kingdome (safezone)
      You are only allowed to destroy blocks (if we do this) if members of the other kingdome are online.
      If you end up being invisible dont be a dink, if someoen says your invis relog.
      Your house if in a PVP kingdome has to be accessible to enemies
      What does this mean? It means you have to use redstone on your doors and you must have doors
      This means you will have to put secret switches / combos on a door.
      We could exempt treasure rooms so no chest griefing, But dont hide in your chest room.
      Any violation of a law will be a warning for the kingdome and after the warning a 1 block deduction, awarded to the kingdome that caught you breaking the law.

        I never crashed, just relogged myself a couple times.

        When I would die and respawn other players were invisible, I think.

          I still can't ride minecarts (get disconnected), and I cant pick up blocks.

          The picking up blocks seems to be some sort of issue with my character, as other people didn't have that issue. I when and demonstrated to to someone last night (forgot who), by placing some dirt blocks breaking them, emptying my hand, and then walking over the broken block, and it didn't get picked up. They saw me break the block, and not pick it up, and were themselves able to pick it up.

          Also the minecart issue seems to happen if no one else is in the area, I was able to get in a minecart near that other person, but when I walked a was away (far enough that I didn't see their name anymore) and tried again, I got disconnected again.

      I seemed to have gained immortality. I'm down to one heart but cannot drown or die from mobs. They aggro me but can't hurt me. I however can kill them, I just can't pick up stuff they drop. Other players cannot hurt me as well.

        If you're wearing armor, and you take damage, you will die as if you had no armor hit points, but you will still be walking around (immortal, but can't interact, monsters follow you, but don't attack, etc.) Take off armor, then kill yourself by jumping off a cliff. Your death/damage will take effect after you reconnect to the server. Then you will die properly and can respawn normally. Don't use armor!

          I'm still a ghost. Can't pick up items, even the stuff I dropped when I died. I'm also invisible to others, no matter how many times I've re-logged.
