Morning Discussion
As I think I mentioned before, last week I finished Red Dead Redemption and had a jolly good time. One very pleasing small thing was the near-absence of an ambient soundtrack, leaving silence punctuated by occasional strums, twangs and fiddlings. While the orchestral score had some rollicking ditties, it's the twangs which filled my ears with glee.

Speaking of false alarms, did I (Minecraft name is ElucidoVia) get banned from MercFox1, for some reason? When I try connecting, it says "Permission denied."
All I ever did was see the sights and occasionally get materials for stone pickaxes and boats, and not many at that.
Hyrule looks like it could still use some basic landscaping (terraforming, whatever). Bugs or not. I can at least fill in watery bits with dirt.
Don't know when I'll have interweb access later today, but I wanted to ask.-

-
Until I started reading daily, (I blame the Minecraft threads) I pretty much just lurked, so that explains why you don't remember me at the shack.
In Minecraft the name is ElucidoVia, but even then I typically only have a little bit of time, so I never got around to really hanging out on the server. Did get to do an early test of the log flume, that was neat.
Uh, yeah. About to lose intertubbles for a bit, but hopefully back around noon.

Notch has made his office Spotify playlist publicly editable:

now you all have an avenue to express your inner nerdrage by making them listen to terrible music while they work -

UPDATE - tried to do a Minecraft update today, and it turns out I didn’t bring the keystore with the private certificate key to the office.. I set a reminder alarm on my cellphone to remind me tonight to bring it.
So.. Update tomorrow, with working SMP health, including fighting monsters and other players.-

You know, I really don't get the people who defend notches ways. It bothers me. He's made a lot of money from this concept and I feel a post like that is ridiculous. It's not like he's a terrible human being or anything, I just feel that when you create something like this and profit from it, you should have a greater sense of responsibility to your dedicated fans. After all the fans are the people who used word of mouth to get this concept to grow so quickly. Sure it's only a game, but it's a game that brings a lot of people joy.

I guess I'm in the minority here but I actually enjoy his honesty. It might cause a lot of fuss in the community... but I find it entertaining and refreshing. I like the fact that he says whatever-the-fuck is on his mind and I also enjoy his attitude that he really doesn't care if people get their panties in a bunch over it. In the end... we really didn't pay a TON of money for the game.. the game mode has 'alpha' in the title... and he never intended the thing to get so big.. it's really not his fault. He has a kind of.. take it or leave it attitude and I kind of respect him for that. Good for him.

On one hand, some people's expectations are absurd. On the other hand, its "the internet" and everything snowballs into a bigger deal than anyone really actually cares. (Or should anyway.)
I don't necessarily agree with a lot of his decisions or priorities, but I think people go way overboard in what they believe a one-man indie dev can accomplish in a few months while trying to grow his business and still live a life.
For one thing, its hard to be a great business owner, game designer, software engineer, network/server admin, and community rep. all at the same time. If I were him, I certainly would be doing things differently, but I can't honestly say whether the net sum of my efforts would be better than his in this short of a timeframe. -
-
While this is very interesting and good news... I have a small bit of fear growing that suddenly groups of players are going to be roaming the server ready to PK me as I punch trees! I'm going to have stressed out flashbacks of the early days of Ultima Online!! All they have to do is put on black block-shaped robes and figure out a way to toss fireballs!

You're missing an option, I think.
How about leaving as is or moving spawn, with the possibility of a reset if it's not fun.
We might find that it's fun battling monsters and each other in our pre-built structures, with lots of items to fight them with. Then again, even with moving spawn, it could suck. So we should leave the option of doing a reset, if things don't work out with no reset.
Of course keep backups of the server, maybe one day we'd want it back, if he ever splits up 'adventure' and building mode. -
-
-
-
-
-
why are other structures fair game with option 1? I mean why are we sanctioning griefing now? I can't vote for any of those.
also there is cool stuff in the world. a waterpark that isnt getting the visits it should because boats are wacky. tracks everywhere waiting for terrain loading fix. LTTP underway.
People (other than ass-street) are really cool with junking it so they can swing swords at each other (and at monsters that spawn out of thin air, i thought that sucked?) in a game with horrible netcode?
I shouldn't vote anyway because I won't be on, and the choices really underscore why :(-
-
yeah that's great, if you go the reset route and he has an awesome server and can keep it from crashing and corrupting. or you could pick option one and people blow things up, or option two and i never see stuff again. I'd rather just have a copy of my stuff at this point. Was dumb to build it in SMP
-
-
-

I think that was poorly worded. Discussion on the mod board seems to be revolving around establishing 'cities' using the Towny plugin, and people will be punished for things that happen inside those zones. Outside those areas = you're on your own.
We're obviously not turning the server into Grieftron 3000, you've got Morfus' server for that -
-
-
-
-
-
I guess if we reset, we reset. Though if we do, my predictions: squabbles/rushes for land rights near the new spawn, initial griefing on those players who secure the best "property", dupers start duping again, non-dupers have to start re-acquiring the resources they just lost because of the reset.
Now, if we could do a restart with the players scattered around a bit with various individual (or group) spawns - that might be something interesting.

no mobs at all. it seems clear to me that your server should be the builder server; it's where all the impressive constructions are. it has far and away the greatest number of pre-existing structures that we'd want to save. let the other underdeveloped servers do the pve thing; they don't have many buildings worth saving from creepers anyway.

I think it would be so fun to have a battle server. With a couple of warring factions, with designated server-wide battle times, neutral and contested territory. People could build forts and mine until battle time, then it's just all out war. Battle is over at a certain point, then people recover and rebuild. I think it would be such a fun team effort.
You'd have people that tried to be scouts and check out farms and sabotage all that so their resources became harder to mine and slower to produce, etc. That would be great.
