Weekend Confirmed Episode 35
by Garnett Lee, Nov 19, 2010 8:20pm PSTThanksgiving might be a week away but the new release feast is in full swing. After a couple of quick follow ups to last week's Black Ops coverage, Garnett, Brian, and Jeff serve up Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, 007: Blood Stone, and Donkey Kong Country Returns as the main dishes in Whatcha' Been Playin? The reactionary commentary of ESPN's 1st and Ten cast in response to Kobe's appearance in the Black Ops ads starts off the Warning. Your thoughts on shooter fatigue, urgency without a ticking clock, and more take the conversation right up to the Front Page. October's NPD sales numbers and Bizarre Creation's uncertain future headline a full slate of news.

Maybe this doesn't fit because I don't know if Assassin's Creed sold well or not, but I know it was critically not very well received. Ubi saw potential and took a shot at a sequel. The result was a game of the year contender (and one of my all time favorites). That was a good business decision.
Cutting your losses on something that has the potential to be a winner is not a good business decision.

I can guarantee you Activision didn't buy Bizarre to have them go through a few games before getting a hit. It's not necessarily a good business decision to keep a studio that failed to bring in a profit for you despite review scores. They have the option to cash out now and get something rather than put more money into the studio and gamble on a third game.
I wish the industry was such that studios got to create exactly what they wanted on their own time frame, but that's a pipe-dream. These are publicly-traded companies and their goal is to make money. It's naive to think game development studios should be immune to the same job market bullshit that affects all areas of the job sector because they make kick ass games.
