Weekend Confirmed Episode 35
by Garnett Lee, Nov 19, 2010 8:20pm PSTThanksgiving might be a week away but the new release feast is in full swing. After a couple of quick follow ups to last week's Black Ops coverage, Garnett, Brian, and Jeff serve up Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, 007: Blood Stone, and Donkey Kong Country Returns as the main dishes in Whatcha' Been Playin? The reactionary commentary of ESPN's 1st and Ten cast in response to Kobe's appearance in the Black Ops ads starts off the Warning. Your thoughts on shooter fatigue, urgency without a ticking clock, and more take the conversation right up to the Front Page. October's NPD sales numbers and Bizarre Creation's uncertain future headline a full slate of news.

My thoughts:
-It seemed pretty unfair to compare Halflife 2 with BLOPS... I haven't played BLOPS, but I did see a 1 hour interview with one of the BLOPS developers who was talking about what he was excited about, and it was all about the multi-player. It even almost made me want to play the game hearing about all of the huge number of customization options, different play modes, betting modes, all sorts of cool stuff.
HL2 was about the SP experience. To basically say, "what I want is a AAA SP experience, AND a AAA MP experience in the same game... well, that's a nice idea, but it is going to be very rare... and very expensive.
I agree with Brian: as long as having a great MP experience is enough to sell a ton of copies, with a fairly good SP mode for icing, that would probably be great.
Also, this idea of trying to tear apart a "pure artistic perspective" from sales is really just a form of elitism. The reality is that BLOPS sold well exactly because it IS what a lof of people wanted. To claim my own determination of what has artistic merit is more valid than the buyers of BLOPS is simply arrogance in a thin guise.
Sure, these games will keep evolving, but I feel they are a lot closer to the ideal than this episode gives credit for.
-On the Kobe issue: I agree with Garnett, of course, that claiming this is "highly offensive" or some such is silly. I also agree with Brian that being surprised at silliness of this sort is a bit silly also ;) Sorry Garnett, radical perspectives are quite common on Earth... sad, right?
All that said, I did find the commercial a bit creepy. For me, it did lay open the core issue that these games do indeed put "normal" people into the role of brutal, continuous, bloody killers. That *is* the fantasy that is being entered into. Offensive? Not for me, but these games are ultra violent, and I can understand the reaction of people who are against violence and war (which really is most of us) and getting confused that these games are somehow endorsing these activities.
-Finally, not sure why Fox New was once again made a target. I don't watch Fox News much myself, but I remember the Mass Effect sex and the Hot Coffee issues being on normal network news. Let's also not forget the recent censorship attempt made by the left regarding games... anyone who feels that it is the right-wing that the primary censorship vibes are coming from is simply wrong.
Yes, the religious right is going to be pro-censorship also in many of these cases, but the real "action" in this area is currently eminating from the left.
