APB Property Acquired by GamersFirst; Relaunching As Free-to-Play in First Half of 2011
by Xav de Matos, Nov 16, 2010 11:55am PSTIt appears that, for the most part, the rumors were true: Today, Reloaded Productions Inc., a whollyowned subsidiary of publisher GamersFirst, announced it has acquired "all the Intellectual Property Rights" to RealTime Worlds' cops versus criminals MMORPG, APB: All Points Bulletin.
According to the press release announcing the acquisition, GamersFirst revealed it plans to re-launch the franchise in "the first half of 2011" as APB: Reloaded--a free-to-play, Unreal Engine 3-powered title, developed by Reloaded Productions Inc.
Less than three months after launching, developer Realtime Worlds closed down the servers for the online title. Today's announcement makes no mention of the rumored £1.5 million ($2.4M) price-tag that had been attached to the sale.

- Buy MMO and IP for pennies compared ($2.4 million) to how much it cost to develop (~$100 million)
- Hire small staff to manage/create content
- Release F2P, bank on microtransactions (which make a killing nowadays)
I could imagine they would recoup their initial investment rather quickly. I would imagine they may think of renaming the game and starting anew, but I'm not sure if that would matter much.
