Morning Discussion

The upcoming Xbox Indie Games promotion that developers are kick-starting on their own is a great idea. Sadly, Microsoft has done little to promote stand-out titles on the channel and this is a way for notable studios that are working on ambitious titles to get some Xbox 360 user base attention.

If you're interested in reading more about these and other indie titles, make sure to keep your eye on our sister-site: Indie Games Channel.

There's sure to be something of interest available during the week-long promotion.

    Friday Morning Minecraft Thread!
    Disinterest Edition!!!

The last few weeks have been filled with ever smaller Minecraft Threads and increasing negativity regarding the game; it might be time to retire the daily posts until things get fixed up again!

    Multiplayer Servers!
    MercFox1 : shackeast.sytes.net / se.shkn.ws / shackeast.shkn.ws
    Shadowdane : shadowdane.shacknet.nu / sd.shkn.ws / shadowdane.shkn.ws
    Chicken Fur : 69.169.149.253 / cf.shkn.ws / chickenfur.shkn.ws
    m0rfus (PvP/Mobs on) : morfus.dyndns.org / morfus.shkn.ws
    Haxim (TNT Server) : asplode.dyndns.org / haxim.shkn.ws

    Teamspeak : ts.shackbattles.com:9987

Singleplayer continues to delight; I am routinely blown up and terrified out of my mind! I found pumpkins last night!

It completely destroys my ability to sleep! It's sad but also kind of rewarding to figure this out. I've been trying to track down what's been messing with my ability to fall asleep at the proper time, and eventually it hit me, "Maybe it's that game I play every week! The one that leads me to staying up until 3 in the morning!"

I'm a horrible player though, so this works out pretty well for everyone; the open spot I'll leave behind will have to be filled by a more skilled player than me, by virtue of my bring the weakest link!

Yeah, people are expecting a little too much from what is essentially a game paid for with fifteen American dollars.

The single player is fine. The multiplayer portion of it has issues, but Notch seems to do well getting those fixed.

I'd play minecraft more but it's boring to play it by myself, so I'm waiting for more shackers to show up.

            November 16, 2010 10:41 AM

basically, from the perspective of the render, the base of the sign must be visible. If there are any blocks in the direction of the camera between the sky and the base of the sign, it won't be rendered.

However, you can hack this so that the sign need not be visible in game be still be on the map. You can place a bloc on all four sides of the sign and one on top, as long as the diagonal block to the south west and one level higher than the sing base is air, and there are no additional blocks blocking that direction.
For example, the Lamplopolis sign is actually under the base of a wall of a building, so it isn't visible in game, but the diagonal SW and up is clear, so it renders on the map.

That track on the island is connected to the track on the main land, but the render doesn't show it. (the track in nearly directly north / south there in game. I'm at that location now, and the track was laid about 2am EST this morning.

it's just mod creators being stupid about distribution. if you're hacking up someone's class files, you don't have the right to redistribute their class file. you DO have the right to distribute a patch file containing your changes and a patcher to apply those changes. nothing here is a gray area, as Notch suggests: redistributing his code is strictly illegal and distributing patches is strictly legal

So with MP being buggy, I decided to actually play SP. Because I never bother, I hacked in some obsidian and other necessities and built a portal. Mind you, I'd never been into Nether but figured I would try it. To start off, I threw on Doom's Level 1 music and rocked out, bashed in a few zombie pigmen heads, giggled at their golden swords and then encountered my first Ghast.

"Holy shit!" I exclaimed, "They're huge!"

What initially was only one quickly turned into about ten, all heaving death at me. Suddenly, my feeling of badassery that Doom music had empowered me with quickly vanished, and I ran the fuck out with my tail between my legs.

Ghasts actually aren't that threatening if you keep a cool head, you can kill them easily with bows or by knocking their projectile back at them with your bare hands if you're a badass. They're much more dangerous if you let them chase you around until you accidentally run off a cliff.

Also you should not fuck with zombie pigmen.
