An update to the Weapons Factory Arena page says the Quake3 mod is ready for first release, and they have put up almost all the files right now (weighing in at no less than 60mb), so that modem users can start downloading. The last few files (client and server execute ones) will be released during an IRC launch event tonight, which will be in #wfa on irc.enterthegame.com or pq.gamesnet.net, at 8 PM CST / 9 PM EDT. So, this should be your Quake3 mod of the weekend. Here are some screenshots.

  • Download accelerators speed up all dl's on all types of connections under the right circumstances.

If you don't know what you're doing, of course it'll be slower. The idea behind splitting up a file into multiple downloads is to aggregate inconsistant or cap'd throughput in order to maximize it. This usually offsets the added tcp/ip overhead for each individual connection by itself. If you're on 56K, the overhead is a greater percentage of your measly 5K/s bandwidth, so... don't go hogwild with 10 connections thinking you'll get a better rate. Stick with 2 or 3 at most unless you're dl'ing from a severly bogged down server @ something like 300bytes/sec.
