Super Meat Boy Developers Eying Retail as Solution to WiiWare Filesize Limitation

9
Super Meat Boy's planned WiiWare release has been delayed following Team Meat's struggle to bring the game's size down to 39mb in order to squeeze by Nintendo's limit for the platform.

One possible solution would be to go retail and Team Meat has asked fans on Twitter if this is an avenue worth pursuing, writing:

if we decided to try to find a publisher & do a boxed version for $20 (with extras) but come out later on the wii, would you hold out?

Team Meat told Shacknews "the size limit is a huge issue. We are looking into our options and talking things over with Nintendo to see what we can do," adding, "We are trying to deal with these issues with the mind set of making the best version of the game as possible above all else."

The PC version is on track for a November release, but any Wii release this month will be "impossible." What say you, Shacknews reader? Would you wait for a boxed release on the Wii? Who do you think should publish the game?

How much on-board storage does the Wii have? Is this size limit reasonable? That seams really damn small to me.

512 MB of flash memory, and an SD / SDHC card slot (but I don't think that's usable for WiiWare).

It's slightly absurd to me. In the past, Microsoft had a sliding scale for their file size standards for Live! titles, and were willing to work with developers on those file sizes. But Nintendo is apparently just a stone wall when it comes to those kinds of negotiations.

This is all just another indication that Nintendo continues to ignore the online side of the industry. Sad...

XBLA titles have a hard limit of 2 GB; Oddworld Stranger's Wrath is currently 2.1 GB, so it won't make it to XBLA, barring "a miracle": http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/65784

It wasn't always 2GB though, is my point. It slid up. Nintendo isn't budging.

but a sliding scale? since when? from what I remember they had a really rigid system going with a hard size limit aswell. and many devs had the same thing as is going on here happen under xbla

I don't know how else to explain it. The limit on WiiWare has been the same (40 MB) since the service launched. Live Arcade's has expanded from 50 MB to 2GB in the course of 3 years, allowing for progressively larger games to be sold on the service.
