ECA Organizing Gamer Rally for Free Speech at US Supreme Court
by Garnett Lee, Oct 20, 2010 9:30am PDTThe ECA has announced plans for a free speech rally at the US Supreme Court in Washington D.C. as part of its continuing campaign to raise awareness of the threat posed to First Amendment protection for videogames by the potential outcome in Schwarzenegger v. EMA. The rally is scheduled to take place Tuesday, November 2 prior to the 9am EST opening of the hearing in which oral arguments will be heard in the case.
Jennifer Mercurio, Vice President and General Counsel for the ECA, encouraged gamers to attend saying:
"This will be a historic day for gamers and the video game industry as a whole, and we greatly appreciate everyone who has taken action on this pivotal issue. Video games, like any other form of entertainment, should be protected under our First Amendment and now is the time to stand up and let our collective voices be heard."
Those planning to attend can RSVP here. More information is available on the ECA site.

This story is final proof that the yanks are the dumbest, most easily led, ingorant excuses for human beings on the face of the planet.
This issue has NOTHING WHAT SO EVER to do with freedom of speech... the issue is a matter of parental responsibility... NO ONE is saying that mature games WON'T get made.. what they ARE saying is that as games become more and more about sex and violence, that there should be CLEAR LINES between what is mature material and what isn't... the legislation is saying that if PARENTS WON'T MONITOR WHAT THEIR YOUNGER CHILDREN ARE BEING EXPOSED TO THEN SOMEONE HAS TO DO IT.... They are trying to introduce legislation that forces games retailers NOT to sell mature products to children not of an age to purchase then ESPECIALLY WHEN IT SAY SO ON THE BOX..... What is bad about that?
The fact of the matter is that those people screaming about it have NO CLUE WHATSOEVER what the actual legislation is REALLY about.. AND the rallys that are being organised, are being dome so by CORPORATE ENITIES who don't give a TOSS about about your rights, they just want to sell as much of their crap as they can and want no restrictions whatsoever on their ability to make money, regardless of whom it affects.
You know it's really funny... you Americans didn't give a toss about the REAL threat to your rights when your administation was riding roughshod all over your constitution as an exuse for an illegal war... but when it comes to games you get all outraged.
Your whole country is a joke.

I'm all for free speech and everything, but how is this a violation of first amendment rights in the first place? It's not banning M-rated games or fining game companies who put adult content in their games, it's just not selling m-rated games to minors. Why can't the kid just have the parent or someone else buy it for them? It happens anyways and I don't see how this is a huge problem.
It's already been years passed since at least in Pennsylvania they do not sell m-rated games to kids and even read the ratings content to the adult or parent thats going to buy it. How will this be any different?
