Morning Discussion

I played the 1982 Pac-Man board game at a games party last night and I must say I was surprised that it's genuinely enjoyable. Up to four players move around the board, gobbling pills, but the twist is that you also control the ghosts too. You roll two dice, using one to control your Pac-Person and the other to move a ghost. Will you go on a munch-frenzy with your high roll or use it to go on the offensive? Catch a player with a ghost and they're sent back to their home square, letting you steal two of their marbles as a reward, but if you've gobbled up a nice pile of pills it can be difficult for other players to take you down. Down the pub, surrounded by fellow geeks, after a few drinks, it's rollicking good fun. It's not perfect but certainly not the boring cash-in I was expecting.

So, adaptations, then. What's your favourite video game based upon a book, film, myth, legend, meal, car or corporate mascot?

A lot of weird crimes happen in New Vegas, I just stumbled upon a serial killer clown who works doubles as a stripper who has a gambling problem.

I don't entirely trust Eurogamer. They seem to shit on games just because the games aren't new or different or whatever. If they say a game is good, it's probably good, but them saying a game is bad doesn't necessarily mean anything.

Yeah I know that they reviewed the MMO Darkfall without playing it for more than a few hours. It was a pretty nasty and very misleading review.. If I remember correctly they even issued an apology for it

To be fair, it fairly clearly seems like shit MMO anyway at the end of the day.

Not that they shouldn't have done their job properly, though. But still, for someone as solid as they, I can allow them a bad pitch every now and then

Yeah it really was pretty crappy.. But I was playing it at the time they published their review, so I was naturally a little butt hurt :D. That said, they really did screw the pooch on the review, they said some pretty bad things about the game that were completely false.

Didn't they re-review it after the backlash and come to more or less the same conclusion?

They do a bit of this, but at least when you see them give a good score, you can typically trust that the game is something special.

They're not perfect. No review site is. I just find that Eurogamer has well written reviews and pretty fair scoring in general.

I agree, not a fan. They use so many freelancers and have no editorial consistency. Giant Bomb, I have yet to disagree with once which is awesome.

I know this is shitty but I can't take a review seriously with a GIGANTIC FULL PAGE CURTAIN AD of the same game they are reviewing surrounding all but the strip of writing down the middle. I like eurogamer and all, but these situations piss me off however I suppose unavoidable in certain cases they are

Well, seems like you might know this, but for many (most, I'd imagine) sites the ad sales are done by an ad agency. The sites really have little say on what ads they display, the agency takes care of the sales, placement and all that. The site just receives their cut of the income.

With that reality in mind, I've learned to ignore the silliness of what you described.

Also, forgot to add, just imagine how complicated the whole scene would get it sites started rejecting campaigns based on the grades they are giving the games. "Sorry, we only advertise good games" doesn't mean the game publisher will go away that time, it probably means they'll go away and never come back.

Most publications and sites are pretty stern when it comes to separation of ads and editorial.

Well, I can't count the number of sites and/or reviews I've read that have had me smirking at the fact that the game the text said not to buy has banners all over the place, but yeah... good thing there are some who have some general guide lines as to what is shown and what is not on article pages. Not that I'm bothered when they are.

I get that, which is why I prefaced my comment with 'I know it's shitty'....but I can't help it, I feel dumb reading a review of a game with such advertising for the game literally all over the place. it's reality and sites have to put food on the table but that doesn't mean it isn't off putting to me.

Ugh, me too. I'm going to try to punish myself by holding out for the inevitable goty edition or at least until the first sale that drops the price to $20-$30. I may be waiting a while but I need to show some self-control and not add to my game backlog!

The overall concensus from reviews so far seems to be better story, familiar but fun gameplay, hardcore and crafting kinda uneccessary, much better story, buggy as fuck.

Poor Obsidian, it's like they'll never do a stable game, but at least this one's otherwise good.

I haven't encountered any bugs so far but I've got weird slowdown issues. It's not framerate I don't think because it runs around 60fps for about 10 seconds, then just stops for 2, then back to 60fps. Fallout 3 kinda did it with the mods, not sure what it is. Changing the view distances didn't do anything and it only happens outside.
