Evening Reading: My Friends Are Game Dev Story Obsessed
by Garnett Lee, Oct 18, 2010 5:00pm PDTWell the games of fall are really pouring in now. Fallout: New Vegas this week, Fable 3 and Rock Band 3 next, and the Kinect launch and Black Ops right around the corner. Add in all the assorted others and it's easy to get completely inundated. Yet over the weekend it seemed like all I heard people talking about was Game Dev Story for the iPhone/iPod.
Here's what we've been talking about on the Shack today:
- World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Cinematic Trailer
- Steam Surges Past 30 Million Accounts with 178% Growth Over Last Year
- First DLC for Fallout: New Vegas Exclusively on 360 This Holiday Season
- Blizzard Sues Three StarCraft 2 Hackers
And a few random things to wrap up Monday with:
- If you haven't yet, watch our very own Del Rio make his debut in Steph and Lance Go To Compton. Seriously, it's funny.
- Why does it not surprise me Justin Bieber pitched a fit when he flunked his driver's license test
- Part of that ridiculous sum of money Microsoft plans to spend marketing Kinect will be paying to get Kinect on 'Oprah' and 'Ellen'

"We've now passed RIM [which sold 12.1m phones in the comparable quarter], and I don't see them catching up with us. It's going to be a challenge for them to become a competitive platform and to persuade developers to develop for a third platform after iOS and Android."
He also forecast that would-be rivals to Apple's iPad tablet computer would struggle to make a mark because many were offering screens only 7" diagonally – "which is only 45% of the area of the iPad," Jobs said. "We think these 7" tablets will be DOA – dead on arrival. They'll learn the painful lesson that they're too small and have to expand them next year.

2. I have to use a case to prop it up easier? Really? That has nothing to do with what I was talking about, the weight and dimension of the device. Grab a ruler and measure how much wasted space around the boarder of the screen there is, it would be significantly smaller. It also weighs quite a bit and Im not the only one who feels this way. Several dozen tech journalists have made the same comments including Molly Wood from Cnet's Buzz Out Loud podcast.
2a. Im not talking about the 'future' devices, Im talking about the current ipad. I could give a shit about next years model in regards to my original comments. Since neither you or I have any clue as to what it will be, we both cannot speak intelligently of it.
2b. Remember the iphone prices? When Apple first released it for $700 and then realized they were ripping people off and lowered the price to $400 and gave a $300 rebate to those that already purchased it? Then shortly after that initial price drop, they dropped the price again to $300 (both price drops were within the first six months of the device going on the market). Im surprised the same thing didnt happen with the ipad. Consumer reports did a report stating cost of the hardware parts were around $120. So, $380 to pay for the software on the ipad (which as far as I can tell is no different than an upped resolution port of the Iphone OS) and labor to put the device together? Yea, I dont buy that the labor and firmware costs are $380 for each device. I also dont buy that doubling the storage memory justifies $100 each time (from 16gb - 32gb add $100...from 32gb to 64gb add another $100).
3. Why do I have a hard on for expandable memory? Well, in the case of the Ipad, I could care less mostly because I dont use it for anything other than reading but in the case of my samsung galaxy phone, I have 2x32gb sticks that I swap in and out for either video I use the camera in the phone to record or playing music/audiobooks/podcasts that I copy to the memory stick.
3a. You know what the beauty is? Each 32gb stick not only is cheaper than the $100 premium Apple is charging for the added memory on the ipad but it also has faster read access times than the ipad. The reason an sd card slot is important on any digital device today is, generally memory gets cheaper and cheaper allowing the user to expand their memory capacity for much cheaper the the premium the vendor (in this case Apple) charges to buy the higher priced unit with more memory. It also allows the user to expand memory for the user's own needs. A year from now, should I decide that 32gb isnt enough for me, Im going to have to completely replace the unit for a whole new unit to get a memory upgrade? That's absurd.
Memory cards arent going anywhere anytime soon unless they are replaced by some other storage replacement. Until unlimited data plans are available from cell carriers, they are almost a necessity for any smart phone, they are darn near required for any digital photography (including movies) and are extremely convenient for moving data from one place to another quickly while using encryption.
Care to explain why Apple sells an SD card expansion for the ipad that allows you to import photo's from your digital camera to the ipad if SD cards are near being obsolete?

"Why not just buy one with large built in storage and never have to worry about it?"
Well shit, this contradicts your first mis-statement. That increases the price of the unit TO ABOVE $500...
