Microsoft: Xbox 360 Top Selling Console for Fourth Month in a Row

With the NPD Group recently deciding to ditch public reporting of monthly hardware and software unit sales figures, we're expecting way more monthly messages from those representing the "Big Three." Oh, look, Microsoft's up first and, according to numbers they've received from the NPD Group, the Xbox 360 was the top selling console in September.

"Xbox 360 enters the holiday season with four consecutive months as the #1 console in the U.S.," a representative for Microsoft noted in an email. "With 484,000 units sold during the month, up 37% from last September, a stark comparison to the other console platforms."

While the NPD Group won't release monthly hardware sales information to the public, the group will continue to track sales and share figures with the related companies. The NPD Group will also allow those companies to relay any information, as it pertaines to specific companies, to the public. Since all companies are given the same details, we don't suspect we'll see any funny stuff.

Microsoft also revealed that Halo: Reach sold 3.3 million units during its launch month and that pre-orders for the upcoming Kinect peripheral are "selling out at retailers nationwide," which they see as a "sign of strong consumer demand before launch on November 4."
