The Carmack on Videocards

A mid-sized (for Carmack that is) .plan update this afternoon from JohnC at id, talking about the new videocards that are coming out giving his technical evaluation on the new NVidia, 3dfx and ATI offerings. Here's what he's saying on 3dfx

Voodoo5 6000 should win every benchmark that becomes fill rate limited. [snip] a Voodoo5 6000 should make all of today's games look better than any other card. You can get over twice as many pixel samples, and have them jittered and blended together for anti-aliasing. [snip] There are two drawbacks: it's expensive, and it won't take advantage of the new rasterization features coming in future games. It probably wouldn't be wise to buy a voodoo5 if you plan on keeping it for two years.

    I think you could get two years from a videocard these days but I think what Carmack is awkwardly trying to say is that in 2 yrs time the features the V5 doesn't have will be more useful. He loves to promote unnecessary features. And even Carmack doesn't know exactly which features will be needed 2 years from now.

    Banking on a videocard's future is an empty promise because for example look at a 2-yr-old Nvidia card, the Riva128. It's features are fully implemented today but who cares? It's too slow to be considered competitive. Voodoo1 versus Riva128 is a dead argument.

    In two years time both the V5 and the G2 will be considered old and slow cards and nobody is gonna be glad they bought an old card for future games.

    So buy whatever makes you happy. In my case that happens to be the V5, so sue me.

    Something funny about these comments.. No matter how many times you see a shacker call another shacker a moron, fag, queer, fanboy, etc...etc. It seems as though they will never realize that it makes them look like a complete and total social retard. Specifically the permanent trolls like pimpstick. Somehow they get the idea that if they try and tear down anyone with an opposing view as much as possible...that the other shackers will accept them.

    I wonder how many shackers read posts and think to themselves:
    "Wow that was an informative post... He really drove the other guy's points into the ground, and that extra 'YOU FUCKING FAG' on the end really topped it off!!"

    ..and how many of them think:
    "Man I wonder how many other shackers are sickened by the kind of shit this guy posts day in and day out. I sure am tired of it. I wish he'd just come up with some good points for once instead of calling people fags, telling them to get better jobs, and belittling them because they pointed something out that he already knew (or pretends to know)."

    I tried the game 'Darkstone' w/my 3d glasses. (the Elsa ones, damn I feel like a marketing ho when i say mention a specific company). If Diablo2 works as good as Darkstone does.... OMFG!
    note- Diablo1 does not work w/the glasses as it is not DirectX 6.1 or higher compat)

    The view looks like a real life chess board.... but even better, the 2d info, i.e. the inventory and spell screens stay in 2d, while the rest of the view stays in 3d. The cursor is also in 2d no matter where on the screen it is, which makes pointing at things in the 3d world a little more difficult, but makes it less intrusive in the game (so I dont know how to think about that, but its not a big deal). There is some flickering every now and then in Darkstone.... but I havent tried to tweak the settings yet.
