    You need a program to make maps, there are lots on some minecraft forums, or the one used here isn't released yet, except in the chatty. It was posted this morning I think, Oizo mapper or something like that.
    
    When I started playing I put my first base within sight of the spawn. You might not have been lucky though. Also maybe make large towers to help you stay oriented. Use one to mark your base, so if you go exploring you'll be able to look around and find it fast.
