Tuesday Morning Minecraft Thread!

After thinking it over a bit I finally realized that the only way I can guarantee I’m going to get the Minecraft posts up on time is by no longer playing Minecraft.

I started my 1st world 2 days ago, and my 2nd yesterday.
The 1st one didn't really go too far. Spent a lot of time excavating beneath my house, planting crops. Only found a few iron. I started work on a tower outpost thing, but all in all, didn't do too much.
The 2nd spawned in some awesome mountainous terrain, though I guess mountains are kinda pointless since the good stuff only really spawns deep down. So I built a little home in the side of a mountain close to a very promising cave system. Within an hour or so, I was cautious exploring, found a bit of iron down there.
Then I just excavated straight down in a spiral until I hit bedrock, and lo and behold, that huge cave system went allll the way down. Where I mined 10 diamond, a ton of redstone, 30 or so iron, found lava, beat a dungeon, etc. So now I have a diamond pickaxe and sword, and it's time to hunt spiders for a bow. Then...time to build something awesome. =D -

OK. If I were you I would flatten out the plain where it will stand to be a bit below sea level -- maybe 6 blocks or so below sea level. That gives you five rings of walls at 12 blocks high apiece with 10 blocks of grace for the White Tree at the top (can't quite remember the name off the top of my head...). If you want to see how high that will be in-game, stop by Orthanc and check out the oasis level. (You may even want to consider 18-block walls.) Minas Tirith is taller than it is wide, so you'll want the space in between rings to be something like... 8 blocks? So basically, figure out how many rings you'll want in the final product, figure out the size of the top layer, and extrapolate down from there.
You may want to try this out in Google SketchUp to get a feel for it before committing in Minecraft :)

Here is it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qx7UKLCNYjw
And this must have taken a STUPID amount of time to put together...-
I just watched it again and I'm blown away all over again. Almost every building inside the walls has an interior with furniture etc. And I like the way it was done almost as a snapshot of the battle.. complete with catapult projectiles frozen in midair and the fell beast in mid-flight. Truly.. amazing.

I posted this in it's own thread but guys you really got to see this. http://shacknews.com/laryn.x?id=24114575

I had fun with this game for about a week, just building stuff out of dirt and sand. Enjoying myself. Then I discovered the inventory window and I could actually craft things. This opened my eyes, so I thought. I spent some more time discovering crafting recipes on my own. Having a lot of fun, then I reached two more epiphanies. Water Buckets and Flint and Steel. First I set the world on fire and then I flooded it. I felt like god. I avoided the minecraft threads here because I've never been big on multiplayer and no one really knows me on the shack but yesterday I decided to connect to MercFox server... I realized I haven't even scratched the surface of what this game can do. I'll be tied up with this for a long time.

IndieGames.com Podcast #2 has Notch talking about Minecraft. Very interesting. He mentions something about "somebody out there has developed a Dwarf fortress conversion tool to import levels into Minecraft.." And that guys a shacker right? (Sorry.. forget your name). Cool stuff. He says he plans on having six employees by December. Good listen.

The game already feels like Nethack in a way.
- You have to fight enemies 1v1 or risk getting overwhelmed.
- Even with the strongest weapons/armor, you can die in stupid ways.
- If you die, you lose all your items and restart.
- Random levels, hidden rooms, "traps" (if digging straight down, you land in lava...)
If you adds an "Amulet of Yondor", more monsters, and 4 astral planes, well, we'll have a cool first person Nethack.-
-
-
-
-
Well, for me, the exciting part about adventure mode in Minecraft would be that people can basically build 'levels' where you have an environment and possibly a goal to achieve etc. It could be a dungeon with mobs and some treasure at the end.. or a treasure hunt with waypoints... or just a cool area to explore. I'd imagine with the amount of people creating stuff in this game, people will come up with some really cool places to run through.

Oh, that the converter is at: http://github.com/TroZ/DF2MC/downloads -
-
Props on making that converter and becoming famous. :)
I admit that I am curious about Dwarf Fortress but the research I've done on it make it sound like the most difficult game in the world just to learn how to play! (And then an even more difficult one to master). I don't have time for that type of game anymore... but it does sound like a cool idea.-
yeah, it has a steep (some would say cliff like) learning curve, as there are multiple things that you have to take care of at the beginning of the game, and if you don't (or don't know how), you will end up loosing (but loosing is fun ). The 'nice' thing is you never lose quickly. One dwarf will get sad, and throw a tantrum, during which he will start a fight injuring another dwarf. That other dwarf will need to rest to heal his injury, but that was the dwarf running your farm (if you figured out how to grow food). Soon, you run out of food, and everyone begins to starve. The same initial dwarf will tantrum again (or another one will) a a big fight will breakout between all your dwarfs, and a few will end up dead. One will go crazy and throw themselves off of the tallest cliff they can find. Eventually you'll have one dwarf left, attempting to survive on bugs and vermin, only to die just after a trade caravan arrives as he doesn't have anything of value to trade for the food that they have.
However, one you get the hang of it, figure out what you have to do and how to do it, it becomes rather easy to get a fortress going and to make it to about year 3. That is about the point that you start getting attacked by goblins, and if you don't have a good trap system or a decent military by then, you'll have other problems. There are also MegaBeasts that will attack randomly, and occasionally you may also get a dragon to attack, so there are still dangers of losing if you make it past the first few years, to speak nothing of keeping the nobles happy.
-
-
-
-
Possibly the most exciting thing he mentioned (at least for me) is that he eventually plans to make the single player and multiplayer exactly the same game. I knew he was planning on making them PLAY the same but he literally wants them to run the exact same way.. so you can invite a friend(s) into your single player game. That would be awesome! Adventure mode where you can't actually alter blocks (except probably by explosions from found TNT or Creepers) sounds like a lot of fun too.

I have a couple in a mine with a shit-ton of torches that grow like every fortnight (ingame). I then built a tree farm on a man-made island in my ocean, and those fuckers grow damned-near instantly (maybe two days max, but I have seen some sprout before I finished planting the other 10 or so I had to do.
-
-
-
-
I go straight down with a 7x7 square to bedrock and then find the highest point of bedrock. That highest point is where my floor will be.
Then, I build my workshop which usually consists of one workbench, a few large chests, and an array of 6-9 furnaces for quick smelting. I then extend 2 of the walls, so that I have a section that is 4 high and 16 across. Each time I clear the wall deeper, since it is 4x16 that's one stack of stone.
I usually use this method to gather stone for construction, but I end up with quite a bit of iron, coal, and redstone. There is also some diamond and gold. Using this method, I was able to create a full suit of diamond armor and a diamond sword in about 3 hours of work. I also was able to nearly complete my castle which I am using a lot of stone for.
I haven't had much of a problem with lava or water, but the few problems I have had were easily resolved by some of the excess dirt and gravel that I've found.
Another positive note, since I have the ceiling of my downward mineshaft opened, when I am at the bottom, animals fall in ALL THE TME. This makes it rain leather and pork. during the day and the torches I have surrounding the shaft seem to scare off the skeletons, zombies, or creepers.
Today, I intend to build Minecart tracks so I can quickly travel between the surface, my workshop, and the mining area using some of the ideas presented in the Minecart tutorials.
-
-
-
This is how I roll, down to bedrock then up 16 blocks: http://www.shacknews.com/laryn.x?id=23582115
-
I don't regurlarly mine for the sake of mining. I usually dig straight into a mountain to create a 'main hall' with a tight entrance (to keep the bad guys out at night). Then I dig hallways off of that and dig nice tunnels down in various directions. I guess I move slowly this way because I dig nice clean hallways with half-block steps and nicely placed torches (instead of straight normal mineshafts) but after while I have a huge network of nicely crafted hallways which go on forever out in all directions. Eventually I hit a natural cavern and just make a clean entrance into that area and explore. Other times I decide I've made a long enough tunnel and create another large hall with rooms and more tunnels coming out of it. I'd imagine this is how the dwarves would have done it. :)

infinite water how does it work?
after watching this youtube video I was trying to build my own infinite water source, but it doesn't work
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5tfmt1z-Lr8
does it still work on multiplayer? help me shack I'm drowning here! lol not really.-
-
-
It's a little weird in MP, I guess due to lag. The basics are (like the above vid):
Create a 2x2 hole. Fill it like such:
~D
D~
Where D is dirt and ~ is water. Destroy the dirt, and the pool will merge into a 2x2 infinite pool.
If you wait a couple days I'm going to make a vid on filling large lakes easily. -

There's still numerous ways you can grief without those. e.g. http://www.shacknews.com/laryn.x?id=24105413 . Or someone could take a few buckets of water and destroy all the lava near your place. And so on.
-
-
No shit Sherlock. Read my post below. http://www.shacknews.com/laryn.x?id=24117969
-
-
I guarantee that if you nerf fire people are just going to grief in other ways. I can personally think of a bunch of ways of doing damage without fire, that I won't share here, because I don't want to give the fuckers ideas. One trivial example is the disappearance of several people's gear from chests.
The real answer is clearly better server logging tools, giving accountability to the griefers. I'm just trying to suggest a solution right now so that we can all build in peace in the meantime.-
-
My opinion on what would be a good start, from a server admin's point of view http://www.shacknews.com/laryn.x?id=24077633

What if you're a griefer checking it out when no admin is online? I'm not saying it's optimal, I'm saying it's the best we can do at this point, where there are no server logging tools, password protection, or anything else. Yes, it's probably a little too strong, but this is about the 4th griefing incident in the space of a week.
-
-
-
The fire nerf in Llama is spliced together with the Furnace fixes and the Lighter changes. Changed lighters also allow the removal of Adminium, something I am NOT a fan of as it's an irreversible change. It's not documented among the Llamacraft thread how nicely these obsolete changes play, but if Llama were to post the source like many are asking, we could just pull out a fire nerf.
I am not introducing the fire nerf from Llama until it is ONLY the fire nerf.

Has anyone had an issue where you lose stuff you created in survival SP? Last night Minecraft crashed on me and I lost a huge aerial walkway I'd been building for 15-20 minutes. When I reloaded the game I was where I was when I crashed, had the same stuff in my inventory, but like 3/4 of the walkway I'd built was no longer there.

I am so glad I am mostly avoiding the shack multi servers.
I look forward to there being more 'game' to the multi, and I admire some of the crazy stuff shackers have built (I'd probably enjoy the cooperative builds, but haven't come across any) but the drama and griefing...and having a hard time finding a little niche area to build in just makes me kinda glad.
Purely personal opinion - plenty of people are obviously having fun with it. -

Down exploring my cave, and I find a little waterfall.

Cool, a secret passage!-

Everytime I think "god this mining is getting boring" I end up stumbling on a cave. I figured randomly generated caves would get boring awfully quick. No. Even on peaceful mode I shit my pants within a few minutes. I get lost. Second guess how to get out. Wonder if I'm ever going to get out. Then I find the torches I put on the floor to signal my way out and feel relief.

it'd be kind of neat to try doing a planned settlement with a street grid, all of the main thoroughfares built to a high standard (block layout + materials) with lanes for foot traffic, boat traffic, and the eventual rail traffic. work out the grid but then combine some plots to do interesting shapes so that all of the city blocks aren't square.
