Let's face it. If you're a shooter fan and own an Xbox 360, you've probably been busy playing some Halo: Reach lately.

Giant retail blockbusters aside, indie developer TriBlox Studios has been hard at work on a 2D shooter called Halo: Out With a Whimper, and has released a brand-spanking-new (free) demo showcasing a few levels from the game's "Firefight" mode. (via IndieDB)

The single-player beta demo includes three playable "Firefight" arenas, where players can battle Covenant troops and vehicles. Starting UNSC weapons loadouts can be selected before diving into the fray, though players can also pick up and use the Covenant's weapons against them as well. If you've got a favorite weapon in Halo, odds are that its 2D incarnation is represented in Halo: OWaW. Based on my brief time with the demo, it seems like it's shaping up to be a fantastic piece of twitch-gaming Halo fan-service.

Halo: Out With a Whimper's official description is as follows:

It is the year 2552, Earth has fallen to the Covenant, and the Human mining colony, Atlas, remains mankind's last stronghold - but not for long. A Covenant invasion force has begun its ruthless assault on the planet. Their only hope for survival rests in the hands of SPARTAN Red Team, but will this be enough to lead the UNSC to victory, or will Atlas become another orbit of glass? Find out when Halo: OWaW hits the net this year!

Player customization options, from armor configurations to color palette, are present in the demo as well, alongside a "Forge" mode that allows you to use built-in tools to edit levels. The UI for "Forge" mode requires a little trial and error to get used to, but definitely has potential.

According to the demo notes, "Halo: Out With a Whimper was created under Microsoft's Game Content Usage Rules, using assets from Halo: CE, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo Wars and Halo: Reach, copyright Microsoft Corporation." That means that the fan-made project is on the up and up, and will be free to download later this year, once it's finished.

You can grab the 17.49 MB PC demo for Halo: Out With a Whimper, from FileShack.
