Russian Nuclear Strike Averted
by Steve Gibson, May 16, 2000 2:28am PDTInternet crime story of the day is a little warning to those internet pranksters. A couple of Russian guys who were posing as Soviet military officers planning on launching a nuclear attack on their own country got nabbed. They didnt just get a slap on the wrist either, they got 1 year of jail time each.
The hoax triggered the alarm of the U.S. FBI and police in Austria, who both asked Russia to investigate, Tass said. Tass said a court in the provincial city of Kaluga had handed down the sentence after the FSB security police uncovered the pranksters. They were convicted under a statute that outlaws alarmist hoaxes causing material damage or danger to the public.

Biologically engineered nasties are the far bigger threat. e.g., one drop in the water supply and an entire population becomes infected, spreads it, and melts into a bag of puss. Stuff like this exists... but no one's crazy enough to use it.

would take a helluva lot more than one....
the strongest nuclear "Missile" (nuclear bombs, dropped from planes for instance can carry a bigger payload) will clean up with a radius of around 50 miles, so it would take quite a few to clean up the world.
Ok Ok, lets not get into a discussion on the environmental effects, nuclear winter, etc. etc..
Actually the manual to Fallout/Fallout2 has a pretty accurate description of a nuclear strike.

I'll bet that there was never any real threat.
The punishment was given to discourage others.
