Call of Duty: Black Ops Dedicated Server Support is Rental Only

24
Treyarch had promised dedicated server support for the PC version of Call of Duty: Black Ops, but I'm guessing the masses aren't going to be happy with how this promise is being fulfilled.

Announced right before PAX, Activision has selected GameServers.com as the "exclusive dedicated server provider" for CoD: Black Ops. What this means is that players hoping to run a dedicated server will be forced to rent one from GameServers.

Servers are already available for pre-order. Unranked servers will top out at 24 players, while ranked servers will be run with a maximum of 18 players. Many communities utilize rented servers, but having this be the only option is a bit disconcerting. It remains to be seen if servers will be provided by Treyarch or Activision as well as the amount of control given to renting admins.

Dedicated servers are better than no dedicated servers, for sure, but this doesn't sound like what gamers wanted. I am in no way endorsing the following practice, but I'm pretty sure this is just a challenge to the PC community to hack the game to enable third-party dedicated servers.

Call of Duty: Black Ops multiplayer was recently revealed and we have hands-on impressions.

I'm just happy that there will be dedicated servers.

It was mandatory IMO. At least with this the games will be good while servers are up. I'd like to say they'd release the server toward the end of it's life cycle but we all know they want it to die after a period of time.. that's the motivation for making it rental only.
