Blues News had a quick Q&A with Epic's Mark Rein on the decision of dropping OpenGL support. There will still be Mac and Linux ports of the next game, nothing is changing about that because of the decision to fully go Direct3D.

  • As long as the game is as modular as UT is, porting should be a straightforward task.

However, if Epic makes design decisions oriented towards Direct3D, this could screw over OpenGL support. The original Unreal based its design on several assumptions of Glide that made other ports difficult. Texture upload speed for example.

A port should still be possible, but it may be crippled like OpenGL and D3D are now with UT. Such are the tradeoffs with optimizing for one technology.

On the upside though, we should get a better performing Unreal this time out. Good >:)

/me hopes W2K will settle down soon so I won't have to run #$@# W98 forever
