Evening Reading

Over the last week or two I've been watching nothing but Whale Wars. It's both heartbreaking and hilarious.

Say what you will in regards to the Sea Shepherds' tactics but, boy, are those an entertaining bunch to watch. Also, anyone set out to protect the gorgeous and extinct whales are good in my books.

I just started watching Stargate SG1 yesterday.

Is the whole series as cheesy and weird as the first episode?

It takes a while to get moving but it is one of the best Scifi shows ever.

You'll need to stick with it for a few more seasons for it to get to a point where I would call it good. It doesn't really hit its stride until the 3rd or so, but some episodes in the first 2 are decent.

It's a fun show which I thoroughly enjoyed (until RDA left after season 8), but it's not something I recommend to people.

Yeah, it follows the classic sci-fi series progression: Season 1 is mediocre (at best) because everyone is still trying to figure out WTF. Season two starts getting pretty good. Season 3+ is where the best stuff is.

I'm at the end of season 1 and right now I'm pretty meh about it, the girl I've been watching it with says it gets better.

The glowing eyes and snake creature stomach pouch things are pretty cheesy, and traveling through space to kidnap random chicks? WTF is up with that?

Cheesy - pretty much. The stories and characters get way better as it goes on, but a lot of the cornball costumes, villains, props, and ideas remain permanent fixtures, and are even mocked by themselves in a few episodes later in the series.

SG-1 is a very light Sci-Fi series that doesn't take itself seriously. It also takes a while to really find itself, so the first few seasons are kind of rough.

      The show is awesome, though.

Amazing. This is what was missing from the dig at Giza. This is how they controlled it. It took us 15 years and three supercomputers to MacGyver a system for the gate on Earth.

The series on itself a lot, so you really can't skip stuff. The first few seasons are rough, but it steadily improves over time.

Ascension was necessary for the Ancients to be who and what they were. It was nice to see humans that treated aloof, superpowerful precursors as I would expect real humans to.

The first few episodes tries to follow the original movie, but the story will soon diverge from the original; however, the divergence is immediate because in the TV series they say that the first planet--the one in the movie, which was never named in the film--is within the Milky Way galaxy, where in the film it's on the opposite side of the known universe. Only a slight difference!
