Probably one of the articles that people have asked me the most to scan, here's "Meet The Next Game Gods" from PC Gamer's November 2000 issue. If you get tired of reading the text, then maybe you'll enjoy checking out the laughable turn of the century fashion:

World Entertainment Broadcasting was the parent company of Arush Entertainment. The game in question became Duke Nukem: The Manhattan Project. Apparently originally intended to be an episodic series!

Almost nine years later, Infinity Ward fulfilled that wish. Thanks a lot, Cliffy.
But seriously, they did release UT2003 with mods and mutators, and a lot of servers were lowgrav and/or instagib, and the server browser didn't have a way to filter out servers running mutators. UT2004 made this a bit better (among other blemishes in UT2003), but then UT3 required the use of GameSpy ID and had a craptacular server browser. I'm mad at how the bad quality of the server browser was ignored, and developers like Epic and Infinity Ward seemed to whine about this, and either stopped making PC games, or ditched dedicated servers to clone XBox Live's matchmaking.
