huh? But its DJ Hero? "DJing" doesn't require you to sing or anything.

If you have been playing GH/RB games, DJ Hero is a similar but fresh approach for the art of mixing. It was praised on its release as one of the first few unique concepts in music games in 2009 (when it was simply a plethora of the same-old).

      Ok: quick gameplay summary:

You play with one turntable per person. The turntable moves so you can scratch where marked. It has three buttons that work like GH/RB's note gems - hit them when shown on the right track. It has a crossfade bar with left, center, and right positions that highlights one side of the mix over the other where indicated, as well as for "orchestra hits" (fast spikes in either direction). There's a special effects dial to use in some freestyle sections to add some additional hits; this dial also is used in some sustained portions like the whammy bar to alter the sound.

All the mixes uses a combination of these elements. Scoring and other gameplay features are like GH - star ratings, "star power" as Euphoria, etc. You can't ever fail a song (good and bad). More stars unlock venues, DJ characters and outfits and gear but can be done easily. The mixes are generally well done (more so from those that are professional/successful DJ artists like Daft Punk and DJ Shadow) and the game includes a good range of mixes that help you to learn all the parts of the gameplay as you progress in setlists and in difficulty levels. It is probably the first music game in a long time (ever?) that has the smoothest difficulty curve.

DJH2 is poised to fix a few problems from the first. Gone is the aggressive hip-hop front end menus, and it is supposed to be much cleaner and faster to get into the mixes. There are now true freestyle sections that let you do whatever you want on the turntable while it is active. There is actually true MP play (DJH1 had something but it was far from being competitive or the like), and a 3rd person can jump in on the mic in a karaoke style track for co-op play, but there is also DJ vs DJ modes that actually do have a competitive flavor.

I've always wondered how you are so informative about these style of games?

I love them. Well, I love most of them - I dislike how Activision tony hawk'ed the GH series, but regardless of what they did to fuck them up, the songs are still generally fun to play.

As such, I am the primary author on most of the Wikipedia pages for these games, so I am tracking on news and the like for them all the time.

so you push buttons and turn table to pre mixed music. I thought the whole cool thing about being a dj was to make your own mix and be creative. This seems like its just copying what someone else already did.

aside from the fact that you can't actually fail out - at least in the original.
