Meet Portal 2's 'Wheatley,' Voiced by Stephen Merchant
by Jeff Mattas, Aug 24, 2010 3:00pm PDTPortal 2's new gameplay trailer introduces yet another charmingly-loquacious robot, but (for a change) it doesn't seem like the mechanical floating sphere named "Wheatley" is trying to kill you. Unless it's possible to be jabbered to death.
Voiced by Stephen Merchant (Ricky Gervais' creative partner-in-crime on shows such as 'The Office' and 'Extras'), Wheatley seems like an awesome little addition to the Portal universe that might make traversing the mechanical bowels of the dreaded Aperture Science Lab quite a bit funnier. Merchant's involvement in the project was already announced, but now we get to hear him in action.
And of course, it wouldn't really be a Portal 2 trailer without GLaDOS, would it?

Sounded just like Ricky Gervais when he said that xD
Looks like there's going to be some classic lines in this game :)
"You did WHAT??!"
Having said that, we'll probably just get used to Merchant's voice and having listened a few times I'm starting to forget the original preview. But more importantly as some others have mentioned, the voice seems a bit off for a robot. The positioning and the non-robotiness as opposed to Glados and every other robot. It just doesn't feel like such an expressive voice is coming from that physically non-expressive steel ball. I feel like I'm just listening to Stephen Merchant talking in my ear while I've got some steel ball flying around me.
I'm not sure if they can impart robotiness to the voice as Wheatley is much much more conversational and rambly and the British accent gives him character... If they gave it a robot voice it may lose some of the charm and humour of that rambly British delivery. It's tough, but maybe they can do something.

Silly monologues.

After seeing some of the video, though, it sounds like the robot isn't a prick like Guilty Spark was, that it's involved in the storyline on the same side as your character. It also helps that I like British comedy (Are You Being Served?, Monty Python's Flying Circus, Coupling, The IT Crowd, etc.).
