Fable 3 Gets Something That's Not 'Pub Games' in October

Lionhead's Peter Molyneux has announced that 'Pub Games,' the pre-release mini-game DLC for Fable 2 that allowed players to get a jump on building their avatars' bankrolls, won't be returning for the upcoming Fable 3. He's got something else planned, instead.

Let's face it. The 'Pub Games' downloadable pack of three Fable 2 mini-games was kind of a mess. Cheaters were able to utilize an exploit the ironically-named 'Tower of Fortune' mini-game in a way that would enable them to start the game with mountains of cash. Molyneux knows this, calling the exploit a "disaster."

According to Joystiq, who caught up with Molyneux at Gamescom, the developer wasn't willing to divulge any specifics as to what that "something" for Fable 3 would be, but did hint that, "It's more to do with this sort of thing," while seeming to refer to his mobile phone.

Fable 3 is due out on Xbox 360 on October 26, with the PC version to arrive sometime later.

What does it matter if they started out with 'mountains of cash'? It's not like money was really worth anything in this game. You buy a few houses and you had a never ending income. I gave millions to my friends who just started playing.

Such a shitty game. I'd have been upset if I'd been the one who made the purchase. Glad my son got it from his grandparents.

I really can't wait to ignore Fable 3 when it comes out.

Hating it usually involved quitting after a few hours. It seems you played more than your money's worth.

I admit it. I played it to the end. It was one of those games where I kept saying to myself, "it's just slow getting started. It has to get better." And it really never did. It's not that there's nothing to speak of with the game. There was some decent humor and I liked wandering around and digging up stuff with the dog. Unfortunately, magic was an I Win button. There was so much to do in the game that was pointless. You could get married and have kids ... but why would you? There were some interesting points in the game, but it was just too mired in crap to let the good bits shine. I did have fun getting my 2 wives into a threesome and watching them argue with each other about who was the homewrecker.

Ultimately, I came away feeling like I had been preached at. The only food you can eat and not become a fat slob was celery. If you don't wear fashionable clothes, no one will like you. Wear condoms because if you don't you'll get an STD from your wife.

In a game that was really striving to be a sandbox game, it felt like there weren't a lot of choices. If you didn't follow the true path, you were an asshole. No gray area at all.

That said, I thought the gargoyles were hilarious.

I didn't get pub games, didn't use the clock-change cheat, and played the game normally. It was a while until I had my first house, and a while until I could buy the best weapons - I had to earn it, and the game had a great sense of progression and reward because of it.

It makes a big difference. If you could cheat and start any game with the best stuff - particularly an rpg, then half the experience is ruined.

I actually enjoyed the pub games. I made quite a bit of money on Keystone. Didn't know about the cheat until much later.

To make a lot of money on Keystone you have to have a lot of money to lose. You put your coins on the highest payouts The middle and the two sides and run the game through. Within about 15k-30k lost, you'll win a HUGE pot when one of the rare ones actually gets rolled. If I'm remembering the amounts correctly, I'd usually lose about 15 or 20k and make 40 to 60k.
