Star Wars: The Old Republic Trailer Shows Space Combat
by Alice O'Connor, Aug 18, 2010 8:40am PDTThe 'tunnel shooter' space combat in BioWare's MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic is given its grand unveiling in a new trailer released to celebrate Gamescom 2010.
Spaceships will also serve as player housing of sorts, letting you and your chums stroll around your vessel, though BioWare has yet to reveal exactly how it will all work.
Currently in testing, Star Wars: The Old Republic is due out on PC in 2011.

Seems lame. Even if it's a fun little arcade distraction, why would you want to pay a monthly fee for what amounts to a PSN or XBLA game?
Perhaps this is their version of fishing from WoW? I guess that would make sense...
I can get that kind of stupid arcade game experience from a $5 Xbox Live Arcade title, for Christ's sake.
I wasn't expecting a full-blown Freespace 2, but having no freedom of movement in outer space is beyond fucking lame. It's like giving someone 99 flavors of ice cream and them telling them that they'll all be delivered simultaneously through a straw.

I'm glad they took this admittedly smaller approach for the launch. It should be good variety. if the game takes off hopefully they can deepen the experience, which is the hope for all features in MMOs. Find what works, iterate.

would like to see: 1) HUD 2) What happens when you run straight into an asteroid?
seriously, i'm half expecting that the HUD will have 3 little ships on the bottom corner showing me how many lives i have left and when i run into an asteroid my ship will flash or blink like i took some damage but just keep flying.

Free roam would be much harder to do. This way players are put through a "tunnel" when thy space travel with a limited number of other players , which (i assume) makes it easier server-side and keeps things a little simpler player-side.
At least thats how I am guessing it works.
