Rage Release Date Announced: 9/13/11 in the US

34
At the conclusion of the Rage presentation at QuakeCon 2010, id Software creative director Tim Wilits announced that Rage would ship on the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 on September 13, 2011 in the US and two days later in Europe.

While id Software has always been a "when its done" company, Tim promised that Rage would hit this release date and that the launch would be the "biggest, coolest, and most badass launch possible."

It's over a year away, but now we have a release date! Which platform are you going to play it on? I'm eyeing the PC version, obviously.

Maybe if Carmack weren't wasting his time on a toy that lacks any real buttons, they'd be able to get this one out sooner.

i don't it has anything to do with Carmack. Probably more to do with scope creep and indecision.

          Game development is inherently imprecise.

Probably true. I tend to point to Carmack though, because as long as I can recall, he's always been the lead guy and portables have pretty much been his hobby.

Carmack has always been the lead dev guy...most of the heavy lifting tech wise is all done when they are thick in development mode. Games take longer these days because the Art assetts take so long to make. The more sophisiticated the engines get the longer it takes to make the assetts for it.

It seems like you point to Carmack because you either don't know what he actually does, or you've decided not to like him.

^This. The heavy work by Carmack was done a while ago; now they have to fill it with content (levels, textures, scripts) and that's what takes the longest.

That's not the reason. That's not the reason at all.

He's fucking around with the engine and scaling it onto portable platforms because the engine on the heftier platforms is more or less release-ready. Unfortunately, you can't just release an engine, the art staff needs to get their hands on the tools to create and import the assets, and everyone else needs to make a story.

I think that the engine is pretty much ready, now they are pumping tons of artwork into it, I've seen some kind of long demonstration with willits comments, or someone else was commenting on how they produce maps, the tools he was using while talking were just mindblowing, he was basically forming the map like a god. Rocks, grass, all sorts of stuff was croping around wherever he pointed the crosshair. It looked like "photoshop brushes" he was just picking things and putting them on the map. Just like crysis editor. I hope the area will be massive, I'm just guessing that this will crush everything with content and diversity of the world they are creating there. I wouldn't be surprised if it would be released on 4 bluray discs ;]. We'll see.

I have become interested in, lost interest in, become interested in, and lost interest in this game during the length of its development. But I'm sure I'll come around.
