Evening Reading

QuakeCon is coming up! Yes, it's an even year, but that doesn't mean Shackers won't be in attendance. I also have a year of Quake Live Pro to giveaway to one lucky Shacker that attends. Keep an eye on chatty this weekend if you're there for details on how to win.

Alright I broke down and bought the game. What do I need to know to get started?

        Single player:
Go to a tree, left click to punch / chop the wood, collect the wood blocks that fall, get 3 or 4.

Press I (i) , then put 1 wood in the 2x2 crafting square to get boards. Put 4 boards in the 2x2 crafting square to get a workbench, which when placed on ground (right click) and used, will give you a 3x3 crafting square.

        All things to craft: http://www.echidnatribe.org/Minecraft/crafting.php

You want to build a house / hut to survive the night. build it around your workbench.
a door can be made with a 3 boards tall, 2 board wide rectangle in the crafting square.

put 2 board vertically in the crafting square to make sticks. make a wooden pick, and wooden axe. chopping wood, and converting it to boards is the fastest way to get material to make a hut / house from.

use the wooden pick to dig up some stone - make a stone pick and stone axe.

Use a pick to dig up coal (stone with black flecks in it). coal on top of a stick make a torch. Torches won't keep monsters away at night, but it will prevent them from spawning in the lit area.

look for iron ore - stone with salmon colored flecks in it - you need a stone pick or better to get the ore. Make a furnace with a 8 stone square, then smelt the iron in the furnace using coal. using the iron bars to make iron tools and armor. you need iron tools to mine gold or diamonds.

Build a huge castle or explore a cavern!

Most of the above is also applicable for multiplayer, but there is no monsters or day / night cycle in multiplayer survival yet

This might help or join the server and people will show you around.

Awesome thanks kaanasim and TroZ, reading info now. I think I'll check out single player first. Does anybody know how intensive the server is?

If you mean if the server gets full yes, you can't easily login at night.

Nah I mean like cpu, ram, bandwidth requirements. I have a linux box I can use but it is on a shared xen box so I can't monopolize cpu time.

From what I hear it can get pretty RAM intensive. MercFox and Haxim know what's up for sure.

I don't know about bandwidth, but a 20 person server is supposed to be able to run with 1 GB of ram for the server process. CPU should be bad, but exploring requires generation of new terrain, which seems to cause some lag, and so may be a bit CPU intensive.

No no no no no no don't listen to the above. The first time you play you should just go in blind, to single player. Have the fun of not knowing how to craft and what happens at night and blah blah. After you've learned to survive a night or two, then go and read about how to craft and do the advanced shit.

Don't ruin that first "oh my god what am I doing what is that noise someone hold me" experience by going to the wikis before you experience the game!!!

Weird Single Player Event: There's this little island across the water from my base. I went there once on the first night I made this new world, died, and never bothered to go back as I didn't lose anything but my tools, some wood and coal.

Tonight I went back and all my stuff was still there on the island bouncing up and down. This is nearly 2 weeks later in real world time and many in-game weeks later. Anyone else had stuff not disappear like that?

Can I get a pretty good experience playing the classic version of the game to see if I like it or not (ie, what features are missing?)
