Plants vs. Zombies Gets GOTY Edition on Steam; New Features for Free Alongside Mac Version

26
Valve Software has announced that it will be upgrading Steam PC copies of PopCap's Plants vs. Zombies to the new 'Game of the Year' Edition, which brings support for Valve's Steam Cloud, "introduces the Zombatar, enabling players to incorporate their own custom zombie creations directly into the game," and adds new content and 20 new achievements.

Additionally, the Mac version of Plants vs. Zombies GOTY Edition is now available through Steam, supporting Steam Play, Steam Cloud, Steam achievements, and the aforementioned Zombatar. As with all Steam Play titles, ownership on one platform grants ownership on the other. Steam Cloud will sync save games and data across all computers, PC or Mac.

"Delivering Plants vs. Zombies via Steam helped us reach a tremendous audience for the game," said Ron Powers, VP of Product Management at PopCap. "Adding Steam Cloud functionality to the game allows us to increase the value of the title to existing and new customers. In addition, with the title support Steam Play for cross platform play, it seemed the timing was perfect for adding Steam Cloud support."

A new copy of Plants vs. Zombies GOTY Edition will run you a cool $9.99--$10 cheaper than PopCap's own store.

Nifty. Might as well dust it off to see what this "new content" is about...

For one , it's about displacing the Michael Jackson zombie with a generic disco one.

The new dancing zombie doesn't bother me. And it's a somewhat understandable change now that MJ is actually dead, instead of pretending to be undead in Thriller. The original PvZ was released in May 2009, a month before MJ died. After that, the joke kind of felt a little weird to me.

Why? He was alive and well when he shot Thriller. Plus his appearence in PvZ is a parody, so moneygrabbing relatives of late MJ can GTFO in my opinion.
Too bad that PopCap let it happen, although I understand they have better things to do than wasting time and money in courts with these assholes.

It's certainly not something I'd go to war over, nor blame Popcap for changing.

Played it at a friend's place. Loved the game, especially the MJ zombie. I *would* get the GOTY edition ... if they hadn't switched in a generic disco zombie. So, no money from me, sorry. :<

Yeah, my Steam version is still set to "no update unless I tell you to!" And it'll stay that way.

It will update next time you launch the game, unless you put Steam in offline mode.
