Rumor: Valve and IceFrog Working on New DotA

44
Voice actor John St. John (Duke Nukem) recently tweeted (now deleted) that he had just wrapped a session at Valve recording for an interesting project, MTV reports. Duke said:

"Had a great time in Seattle last week recording for DotA. The guys at ValveSoftware are awesome!"

IceFrog, one of the main developers of the mega-popular WarCraft III modification 'Defense of the Ancients' joined Valve Software last year and was put in charge of a project. Back in May, IceFrog wrote that Valve would be "making an announcement soon" with regards to his project, but nothing has been revealed.

Based on John St. John's tweet, it appears likely that Valve is cooking up its own version of Defense of the Ancients, which would presumably be a standalone edition running on Valve's Source engine. Adapting new games from DotA isn't a new practice, with S2 Games releasing Heroes of Newerth and Riot Games releasing League of Legends. Even Chris Taylor got in on the action with Demigod.

Shacknews has reached out to Valve for comment and will update you with any new information.

Is the DotA crowd large/willing enough to support a newer game based on the old mechanics? I notice Demigod had a terrible show of multiplayer support, and it was a newer take on that gameplay.

Demigod had so many problems, it really just wasn't ready to ship when it did. LoL is probably a better example of a fresher take on the genre and that's doing pretty well AFAIK but HoN still seems to have a hold on the competitive scene.

        Pretty much ^^this.

To get a player base for a game Valve merely need to release it. A sizable player base is assured (except for Ricochet lol).

And if it's free, with achievements and built-in steam community support, it certainly stands an awesome chance.

Why do they need the same audience? Throw some zombies in there and it's a brand new type of RTS.
