New EQ 'EverQuest Next' Unveiled
by Alice O'Connor, Aug 09, 2010 7:00am PDTSony Online Entertainment has discussed the new instalment in its MMORPG series EverQuest during its 2010 'Fan Faire' event, Eurogamer reports, and given the first in-game look at the new game it's currently referring to as 'EverQuest Next.'
SOE president John Smedley described EverQuest Next as a "reboot" more like the original EverQuest than its sequel, boasting a new "distinctive" art style.

Slides snapped by EQ2 Wire."We want to make something that still keeps the flavour of the original and the lore and the core tenets of it, but we want to make something that is truly next generation," Smedley explained. "We want EverQuest players and EverQuest 2 players to feel like they're at home, but a new home, one that's really awesome."
Sony Online Entertainment continues to work on supporting and expanding the franchise, announcing a new EverQuest expansion named 'House of Thule' over the weekend and launching a free-to-play version of EQ2 last month.

Gonna be a long, dark ride toward the end of this mind-numbing hack-and-slash clickfest genre.

The primary mistakes, in my opinion, were:
1. graphics engine runs like crap, even today, and looks much less good than it should considering its hefty requirements.
2. *constant* fiddling with character stats, combat mechanics, and gear. Every expansion sees some fundamental change to the core game play and, whats worse, the changes have all moved the game in a more cookie cutter, simplistic direction. Removing the ability to customize your character in any meaningful way.
3. there are too many classes that are differentiated from each other by only one or two abilities.
4. dps classes reliance on auto attack which is generally 40-60% of the damage output. Watching an auto attack timer is boring. Requiring one to be successful is just bad design.
5. PvP is fundamentally broken. CC abilities are massively OP. Some classes can literally become impossible to kill while others are little more than free kills.
6. marketplace and station cash selling XP potions and other things that affect game play.
7. lax enforcement of anti-cheating, exploiting, botting rules. I know many people that use third party botting programs to craft and adventure, who have used them for *years*, have been reported repeatedly and have never had any punishment of any kind. Legit players cannot compete with people who have 6 (or more) characters auto playing for days on end.
The world of norrath, its stories, characters, settings, is a really interesting and fun place to play a game so I'll be watching this new game in the hopes that it will be fun to play. But I have little faith in soes ability to learn from and fix their past mistakes.
