New EQ 'EverQuest Next' Unveiled

Sony Online Entertainment has discussed the new instalment in its MMORPG series EverQuest during its 2010 'Fan Faire' event, Eurogamer reports, and given the first in-game look at the new game it's currently referring to as 'EverQuest Next.'

SOE president John Smedley described EverQuest Next as a "reboot" more like the original EverQuest than its sequel, boasting a new "distinctive" art style.

"We want to make something that still keeps the flavour of the original and the lore and the core tenets of it, but we want to make something that is truly next generation," Smedley explained. "We want EverQuest players and EverQuest 2 players to feel like they're at home, but a new home, one that's really awesome."

Sony Online Entertainment continues to work on supporting and expanding the franchise, announcing a new EverQuest expansion named 'House of Thule' over the weekend and launching a free-to-play version of EQ2 last month.

It's still going while a lot of other MMOs have come and gone. It must be doing well enough.

I'm an EQL and EQ2 vet, and I do miss both of them in their heyday. EQ2 still has a lot of players, but they're mostly maxxed and guilded and usually raid, the lower level zones are ghost towns except for the stray group of guildie alts.

That said, there's a metric shit-ton of lore and quests and things to do in EQ2, it's done well with separate zones and dialogue and expansive quest trees dependent upon race and class (unlike Cryptic's new cut and paste MMO format).

To me, this smells a lot like SOE went around and asked people what they would like to play most... and they said "Old school EQL with new life breathed into it". EQ2 changed very rapidly from challenging to a WoW emulator, which is one of the reasons I left. You don't try to beat Blizzard at their own game, you offer something Blizzard does not.

Anyway. Where are the trolls?? Will they be fat classic EQL trolls or skinny EQ2 trolls?? Ooooo, will there be old school corpse runs? Will classes be tied to race or will we see nonsense like Ogre mages?

Ya I really like the look of those screens too. Though I doubt I'll ever play it. I suspect this will be PS3 only?
