Weekend Confirmed Episode 20

By Garnett Lee, Aug 06, 2010 12:00pm PDT It's anything but a lazy midsummer's show as a Whatcha' Been Playin? packed with heavy-hitters including Civilization 5, Starcraft 2, and Madden 11 gets Garnett, Brian, and Jeff off to rocking start. There's so much in there that Cannata-ford a New Game spills over to the third segment before giving way to the Warning. Your thoughts on why developers try and compete with the likes of Halo and Modern Warfare for multiplayer shooters starts the conversation which also includes choosing the right place to sit when gaming, and a brief look at the issues raised this week on Gamasutra concerning whether focus testing resulted in Activision abandoning female action heroes. News from EA's investor reports hits the Front Page along with one of our favorite games, Torchlight, getting the sequel we all hoped for announced.

  • Great episode guys!
I have to get some stuff off my chest though:

I 100% agree about Limbo being a great display of the media. The subtle storytelling is captivating from the start and I was taken by the visual style right away. I have ,however, heard the price argument too often about this game. If the EXPERIENCE is worth money the money it is worth the money. You can't break a game down into $/per minute formulas. As with any other artistic and or entertainment medium, the quality of the overall experience is what matter to each individual.

As an example, if you look at what is one of the oldest entertainment mediums, literature. When was the last time you heard someone say "Well I would never buy that book for that price, it's 20 cent a page", answer, you haven't. Because we don't think of that type of narative in that way. It is only because literature has been around as long as it has that these arguments have been thrown by the wayside.

The real problem with any argument of this time is, as it has been said so many times on this podcast, value is and always will be subjective. I recently had a family member at my home watching me play Limbo. His reaction was not "Wow" as mine had been but was instead "doesn't this get boring?' Is he wrong? I don't think so. He simply does not see the value that I do in the game.

Amazingly enough it can all be wrapped up in a sying we have heard since childhood:
"One mans trash, is another mans Limbo"
