Weekend Confirmed Episode 20

By Garnett Lee, Aug 06, 2010 12:00pm PDT It's anything but a lazy midsummer's show as a Whatcha' Been Playin? packed with heavy-hitters including Civilization 5, Starcraft 2, and Madden 11 gets Garnett, Brian, and Jeff off to rocking start. There's so much in there that Cannata-ford a New Game spills over to the third segment before giving way to the Warning. Your thoughts on why developers try and compete with the likes of Halo and Modern Warfare for multiplayer shooters starts the conversation which also includes choosing the right place to sit when gaming, and a brief look at the issues raised this week on Gamasutra concerning whether focus testing resulted in Activision abandoning female action heroes. News from EA's investor reports hits the Front Page along with one of our favorite games, Torchlight, getting the sequel we all hoped for announced.

  • To the point of the Female leads in games. Jeff went on to mention that they all turn into sex objects. And yes there are tons of hyper sexualized female characters in games no denying that. But what about Heavenly Sword with Nariko? or Samus from Metroid? Moving over to the RPG side of things you have characters like Terra and Lighting from the final fantasy games.

Regardless of if you like the story or not in any of these games they are never presented as a Sex object but they are still good looking. Although I guess you could say Samus' Zero Suit kinda skirts the bounds of that but... point remains there ARE good strong female leads.

And I'm not going to lie and not say that I don't like the hyper sexualized female characters because that would be a lie. But in the same right I like to see strong female leads as well.

I really would like to see gaming spread to a nice even split and not be so male dominated.

Just as on the other side of the coin the male characters are always are roided out space marines oozing with testosterone. And thats all fine and good but I like to see characters like Nathan Drake who is a slightly more realistic grounder character.

In the end gaming is a fantasy escapist hobby and being such I expect a good percentage of the characters in games to be caricatures of what real people are actually like. It lets us be people and things that we can't in the real world.

So, for every Bayonetta you give me I'm fine with that just give me an Nariko to equal things out.
