Torchlight 2 Getting "Big Overworlds and Different Cities"

by Brian Leahy, Aug 05, 2010 4:00pm PDT

Torchlight 2 is already sounding like a much larger game than the original. "People felt a little claustrophobic with the structure - Torchlight is just one town and a series of dungeons underneath. So the obvious remedy for that is to make big overworlds and different cities, so we're doing that," explains Max Schaefer, CEO of developer Runic Games in an interview with Gamasutra.

Players will also be able to customize their character in the sequel with the "ability to select hair styles," but it is unclear if additional customization will be available. Runic is also working on a free-to-play MMO version of Torchlight, but Torchlight 2 will be released first. Says Schaefer:

The more we thought about it, we could give people what they're asking for, and give them a nice, co-op Torchlight experience a lot faster than we could do an MMO.

So it felt like there was a vacuum there. We decided to do it, because it'd make the MMO better in the long run because we'll have a little more experience with making a multiplayer Torchlight, and it'll give people what they want in the meantime. We kind of ran out of reasons not to do it.

The rest of the interview covers Runic in general and the sales of Torchlight, which sold "almost four-to-one" digitally over retail sales. This is much higher than the NPD's overall estimation that 48% of games were sold digitally in 2009.
