Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 Executive Producer Haden Blackman Leaves LucasArts

Haden Blackman, producer and writer for Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, and executive producer for Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2, tendered his resignation with LucasArts today, after thirteen years with the studio.

Blackman briefly explained his decision to IGN:

While the decision to leave LucasArts did not happen overnight or come easily, I really feel that now is the best time for me to move on and explore new creative challenges and I look forward to the next phase of my career.

A LucasArts representative also informed IGN that Blackman's departure won't affect The Force Unleashed 2's development.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 is currently slated for an October 26 release on PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, and Nintendo DS.

The story to the first game was predictable, simplistic, and cliche...I guess I would hardly say it was the worst part about the game though. I agree about these SW games having a tremendous amount of potential, it is just unfortunate that they never cash in on it. It seems to me that this game's story had the same syndrome as the new movies did: the "make the script simple enough that a toddler can follow the gist of it" one. Although in retrospect, more than anything what enraged me about the game's story was how cliche it was...at all possible times.

I really think that the audience likes complex stories and more-than-one dimensional characters more than these companies believe.

Lucasarts has failed the Star Wars gaming franchise since 1999. After incredible games like Tie Fighter and Jedi Knight they started cranking out things like Jedi Power Battles, Battle for Naboo, Rebellion (shudder). Most memorable SW games after 2000 were made by other companies (Knights of the Old Republic, ect).

It's a damn shame too. The Star Wars universe is ripe for incredible games. There is no reason a SW class based team multiplayer game couldn't be as fun as TF2. Or a bounty hunter game set in that universe where the player can choose their contracts and take the game in different moral directions couldn't be as memorable as Mechwarrior 2 Mercenaries. The list goes on and on.

Kind of a shame if you ask me (for LucasArts) as while TFU certainly wasn't great, the story was definitely above average and he probably could have been a good contributor on other projects. I am all for internally developed LA games.
