Blizzard Details StarCraft 2 Bugs and Temporary Fixes
by Brian Leahy, Jul 27, 2010 4:00pm PDTAs with all games, there will be bugs at release. Blizzard has detailed the known issues in StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty on its forums as well as some workarounds for some of the issues.
Most notably, the game will crash if run in a Windows compatibility mode and there is a potential overheating issue if the player spends too much time looking at game "screens that are light on detail" as the "game has nothing to do so it is primarily just working on drawing the screen very quickly." This can include the game's main menu or other interface screens. A simple framerate cap is suggested as a workaround.
There are a few more issues, most revolving around specific software or behaviors. Are you having any issues with your shiny new copy of StarCraft II? What about on the Mac? Performance on a Mac during the beta was lagging behind the PC version, but I'm curious to find out if it evened out for launch.

hard to keep 300fps on max detail.

Also, like every other game now has serious issues with Nvidia cards, big releases and all. After this past year and half I've ran into enough issues to switch back to ATI.

I also can't quit the game or ctrl+alt+del the game when an in-engine cinematic crashes (this happens often)
System specs:
Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
Core i7 2.67ghz
12gb DDR3 1600 ram in triple channel.
2x 60gb Intel SSD in Raid 0
nVidia Geforce 285GTX latest drivers 258.96. I have also tried 197.45 and 257.21
This game is very unstable. No other game I have does anything like this.
Other games I play often:
HL2 max settings
TF2 max settings
Unreal 3 max settings
WoW max settings
Warcraft 3 max settings
Crysis max settings
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 max settings
Mirror's Edge max settings
Portal max settings
Street Fighter IV max settings
COD: MW2 max settings
CS: Source max settings
SC2 has more performance problems on my computer than Crysis... which has none.... and that is probably the sloppiest resource-hogging game I've ever played...
I'd love it for the Blizz dev's to patch this game and fix these problems as soon as possible, OR at least recommend what hardware I need to have for the game to run correctly. Right now I don't have any piece of hardware that isn't 'supported' but I have a ton of issues.

E8500 @ 4ghz
5770 (x2) CF
1920x1200 on Ultra quality
I did get a spot or two of slowdown so I may tweak it down slightly. In MP beta I had quality set down a bit, but I just updated drivers and downloaded the Crossfire profiles (I had never downloaded the CF profiles, whoops?). I'm a bit less sensitive to framerate in SP, but I do think overall performance is great for me.
I'm probably 8-9 missions in. Stopped playing last night after the mission with the giant laser thing against the Protoss.
I do notice it seems like when I exit the game my video card fans are spinning moderately fast when I get back to Windows desktop (not sure I can hear them over the background music in game), even when I've been staring at a menu for a few minutes, which seems to jive with the post.

That's kind of hilarious, though something similar happens in Dead Space if you don't enable V-Sync.

1.) the whole install failed. had to install it again.
2.) after installing the 2nd time, the updater would download part of the update and just stop. This happened during the beta as well.
Id have to kill the updater, re-launch it and pray it would download a little bit more. Repeat x 5.

maybe my computosaur is too old but god it takes forever to load a map/ quit the game
The biggest problem i have is that Bnet keeps going down and that kills your access to achievements. I mean i have now finished the game (it rocked hard) and there were about 5 hours of play where achievements were down.
The same problem goes for playing with mates. I have 3 mates here in my house for the launch, we attempted to play with each other but i was getting worse lag to my friend less than a meter to my left than i used to playing SC1 with a 56k modem! Why, oh why didn't they put LAN in? (i know why, stupid DRM, but still) Or at least a 'network latency' function like in the original.
It also appears to minimise incredibly well but then when you try to get back into it it black screens you for an indeterminate amount of time.

It runs great for a while, then after about an hour it'll hitch occasionally and it takes a really long time on loading screens, then when I quit it took FOREVER to give me a working menu screen and EVEN MORE FOREVER to actually quit to Windows.
Campaign is fun so far though.
