PS3 Firmware Update adds Store Recommendations

14
Sony has released a new mandatory firmware update for the PS3, which adds a new feature to the PlayStation Store. Firmware v3.41 adds a new layer to each detailed content page on the PlayStation Store, advertising "similar" available content.

In each content detail page, a sidebar now appears with a listing of other content PS3 users "may like." According to post on the PlayStation Blog, Sony believes the new feature--coupled with the five-star rating system added in the last update--will help users "discover new games that you may not know about."

An update for the PSP is also in the works; however, its features are even less exciting, focusing on strengthening stability for current software.

Sony. Do you remember a time when firmware updates were only to be done when something was wrong? I do not mind firmware updates that improve compatibility, add DTS HD, close security holes (aka Other OS), or add Netflix/Hulu to the interface.

But to add "likes" to the store? Couldn't this have waited for the Netflix add update? I wish Sony would make these firmware updates optional. Every time I update my firmware on my PS3 60gig launch unit, I feel like I'm rolling a set of loaded dice that are aching to go the way I don't want. I love the SACD, full b/c, separate power switch on the back, and faster BD drive compared to the slims. Plus, mine is silent 90% of the time.

So I really don't like having to update the firmware every month because you decided to add stars to the store. What's next? You decide to change the font size by one degree and need to force me to update again? You want to add an option for pig latin as a language and I'm forced to update again?

I really hope the class action happens on the Other OS thing to get them to stop forcing me to always update to every firmware just to have access to PS store.

In fairness, he has a point. At least the 360 stuff is a little less intrusive... as much as I like the PS3 I really don't like the way it handles some things.

Fired up Uncharted 2 for the first time last night.. and had to wait 30 minutes for it to download and install 600ish mb of updates. Ugh.

But for the many things that irritate me, there are still some awesome system exclusives.. and it's all about the games so /shrug

Right, I don't blame you in pointing this out. He isn't talking about how long the load/install takes for the updates (and I agree with you on that it takes a little to long to apply the patch) he was mainly complaining about having useless patches that could have just waited for a bigger update (like the Hulu one or even the previous one that added the 3D).

Updates are updates just let them be, things happen for a reason. Only issue is they need to fix is the time it takes to download to finishing the install.

I have to actually agree with the OP also. It would be okay if the PS3 didn't take upwards of 15 minutes to download and install a patch. I also ran into the Uncharted 2 example. That one was the worst so far. My 360 only takes about 1 minute for most updates. I wonder what the heck the size of the OS/load is for the PS3 vs XBOX 360.

I have to agree with the OP as well, and the primary reason is that the updates take so long to install that it borders absurdity. Adding stars to the storefront should be a 30 second update, but I have a hard time believing that this one won't take 10-15 minutes like every other update, even if the chances they make are infinitesimal.

I have no idea why it takes so long to update, but the fact that it does was/is a terrible design decision. The fact that they push so many small but time consuming updates that add little value for the consumer is even worse.

As I said in the previous reply with TrulyVexed: He isn't talking about how long the load/install takes for the updates (and I agree with you on that it takes a little to long to apply the patch) he was mainly complaining about having useless patches that could have just waited for a bigger update (like the Hulu one or even the previous one that added the 3D).

Right, but I gather that the ultimate cause of his frustration is that the updates take so long. If they took 30 seconds to complete, I doubt the OP would care about them.

Yeah, I think that might be a hit or miss too. Some people love patches (big or small) and there are people that hate them. Sucks how you cannot make everyone happy. lol

It could be that since I am mainly a PC gamer that patches really don't bother me and I rather look forward to them to see what is new or fixed.

Granted the patching takes too long then needed, it is their choice to release patches whenever they want. People can complain about having to many patches its not going to change the fact that they will keep doing what they think is right. Complaining about the times is a different story, there might be a way for them to fix that with enough complaints.

For the short time I had a PS3 there were three firmware updates, each of which was over 500MB, none of which would work over wireless. I had to download them on the PC, put them on a memory card, and then flash it from there. This meant it was a 20 to 30 minute process each time.

My 360 has had many updates, which all have taken less than a minute and work over the wireless connection.

Sounds like your wireless is weak - try a cabled connection.

Also check to see what signal strength you have:

Settings > Network Settings > Settings & Connections Statues List

My buddy had the same problem that you describe and he was getting around 15% signal strength most of the time. We repositioned the wireless router to the PS3 and it worked fine, alternatively, just plug it in.

      Seriously? Get over it.

Updates also add new features. If the feature was something for you, no problem.

Obviously this helps out Sony more than you. But it can really help some users discover new cool games.

You totally figured it out, it's just a huge conspiracy to get people to pay for PSN Plus so that they can enable the "auto-update" feature which will turn on their PS3 for them and apply patches and shit.

@HisDivineOrder I agree with you, Sony should be working things like upgrading flash in the web browser, improving in-game XMB to be faster and context sensitive, and adding cross game chat. This update is utterly useless and just annoying.

BUT this isn't the place to complain, Sony doesn't care. Try the PlayStation Blog where they might actually read it, but again, they probably wont. Some people get replies to comments on there though.
