Shack PSA: Add a Blizzard Authenticator
by Brian Leahy, Jul 26, 2010 4:00pm PDTWith so many gamers picking up StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty tonight or tomorrow, it's time to have an important talk about account security. There are bad folks out there that will try to gain access to your Battle.net account for nefarious reasons. Now, the risk is certainly higher for a World of Warcraft player -- their precious gold can be stolen and sold for real money -- but it can't hurt to protect your Battle.net account.
To do this, go ahead and add a Blizzard Authenticator. There are two options. The first is to purchase a physical Authenticator, which will generate "unique, one-time use codes". This code, when paired with your account name and regular password, will protect your account. Even if you have been comprised by a keylogger, the code will not last long enough for very much vulnerability -- especially since you're logging in, yourself.
The second option is to download the mobile authenticator if you have an iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, or Android phone. I personally use this on my iPhone and it functions just as well as the real option. Just be careful! If you're getting a new device, be sure to remove the authenticator from your account as you'll lose access. Also, don't lose your phone... though you probably have larger issues at this point.
In any case, if your account is hacked or you lose your authenticator, a call to Blizzard support will fix things as they can remove an auth after you prove you're the owner of your account.

But hey, whatever. Keep up the machismo act and keep telling yourself how much of an awesome leet hacker you are, and that no one can compromise your machine. Enjoy that call to Blizzard when you login naked, all your stuff sold on the AH.
For purely StarCraft II players, I'm not sure how much an authenticator makes sense. If you have an iPhone, iTouch or Android Phone though, it's free, and a habit you should get in to.

Until my Battle.net Account was Brute Forced :( No Keyloggers/spyware/malware/dodgy e-mails/etc, just someone brute forcing got lucky and hit upon my user and pass. Fortunately I wasn't WoW subscribed at the time so the joke was on the hacker.
I was playing SC2 Beta at the time so all he got when he tried to steal my WoW toons stuff was "Your prepaid time has expired, please pay £8.99."
Anyway after I got my account reset I got the mobile authenticator immediately.
So basically you're a tool for thinking you're king shit and that the authenticator is just a "craptastic
addon". I hope you get hacked and lose all your shit.
