Kane & Lynch 2 PC Confirmed to Use Steamworks; 10% Discount Available on Pre-Orders
by Brian Leahy, Jul 26, 2010 12:40pm PDTKane & Lynch 2: Dog Days will use Valve's Steamworks for PC DRM, the publisher announced today. A 10% discount is also available through Steam for pre-order customers bringing the price down to $44.99.
As promised, the PC demo for the game has also been released through Steam. Previous Square Enix/EIDOS published PC games like Just Cause 2 and Supreme Commander 2 have utilized Steamworks DRM and have been digitally exclusive to Steam.
Steamworks is becoming more prevalent for big releases on the PC, though other digital retailers are choosing to sell some of them despite requiring Steam to be installed. Kane & Lynch 2 has not been listed for pre-order on any of Steam's competitors, but other Steamworks titles like Mafia II will be sold elsewhere.
Stardock remains committed to keeping Steamworks titles off of its Impulse digital distribution platform. Stardock has its own client, DRM solution Impulse Reactor, and self-published games including the upcoming Elemental: War of Magic.
Kane & Lynch 2 will use Steamworks for matchmaking, achievements, stats, and leaderboards. It will be released on August 17 for North America and on August 20 in Europe. PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions will also be available for you console-warriors.

I kinda wish Deus Ex had streets as gritty as this.

I was not a fan of the graphical style, either. Outside of some decent filter effects, the models felt like they were from 2001. Also how many lens flares can they fit into one screen? Still, it ran very smoothly at max detail and resolution on a mid-range system. Kudos to the devs for putting out a demo that had a taste of SP and MP. Unfortunately, it just wasn't my cup of tea.
Disclaimer: I never played the original K&L due to negative word of mouth. If this sequel is an improvement over that, I'm very glad I skipped it. IMO, not anywhere close to the standard set by the Hitman titles.
