MAG Gets "Faction Neutral" Game Mode, Sony Details Forthcoming Content and Updates

3
Sony's faction-based, 256-player FPS MAG has received "faction neutral" map selection for one of its game modes, Sabotage. Players choose one of three factions when creating an online character, but are limited to playing maps according to the current standing of the game's persistent "Shadow War".

"If you ever wanted to play against the Valor PMC as a member of the competing Raven Industries on a map that belonged to the third faction, SVER, that option is now yours," explains Jeremy Dunham, senior community manager at Zipper Interactive. Gamers do not need to patch the game for this functionality as it is all handled on the backend.

Though there are reports of player numbers dropping, Sony remains committed to the game and even lays out its plans for continued support, DLC, and events in a statement to Kotaku.

MAG continues to record a strong and steady number of player account logins each day and boasts a robust community that has up to this date logged 1.27 billion kills and a total of 1.11 million games played. SCEA and Zipper are fully committed to supporting MAG indefinitely. Since launch, MAG has received seven patches that have been a direct result of community feedback. We continue to listen to our players and implement new features on a consistent basis; just today, we announced that Sabotage maps are going faction-neutral. Community support goes beyond new content and features with our Double XP and "Play with Zipper" events.

We've also had a total of three DLC releases since launch: two free-the Trooper Gear Pack on March 25 and the Fast Attack Gear Pack on April 29-and the Interdiction Pack, which included a new game type with three new 128-player maps. In addition, we've announced future DLC coming this summer, including Clan Wars, more faction-neutral maps, additional character slots, the ability for all three factions to wage war in one map, and much more. Stay tuned for additional announcements as we continue to expand the Shadow War.

Zipper Interactive is also working on SOCOM 4, which will be released this fall.

Is this any good? I kind of passed this up earlier, but now that I have nothing to play, I'm thinking of buying this. Also does this game use a code to play online? So if I buy a used version will I get screwed?

You're fine with a used copy and it's a pretty fun game. Be warned though you have to invest a bit of time before you open up the larger battles and there's almost no tutorial. If you stick with it the game gets pretty interesting, teamwork is the key. You can't run around acting like a one man army like Modern Warfare 2.

I enjoy it however I actually hated the game for the first couple hours. Not only is the game confusing at first, but leveling up in this game really makes a difference. So when you start there will be a ton of recoil on all your guns, other players may have more health than you, and other various things. If you get this game you'll have to stick with it for a while to fully appreciate it. I really like this game now and it offers a very unique experience.

It seemed kinda fun for a shooter played with a gamepad, however the "massive" part isn't that interesting in my opinion relative to features of other games like the destruction in Bad Company 2. As a PC centric player I found MAG controlled better than BC2 which feels a bit awkward on PS3 but I can play BC2 on PC so I do that over all console shooters I could be playing (Uncharted 2, MAG, Killzone 2, Halo, etc)

I would rent it, level up a bit and see if it's worth a buy (doesn't have single player unlike some of the other games)
