Disc-Free Netflix on PlayStation 3 by October

A disc-free solution for Netflix streaming video on PlayStation 3 is expected to arrive by October, MediaMemo spotted Netflix CEO Reed Hastings revealing yesterday while discussing the company's latest quarterly earnings.

"Before our next call in October," said Reed, "we expect to be launching a major new version of our Sony PS3 user interface which doesn't require a disc and is dynamically updated continuously with the latest Netflix UI improvements."

While the Xbox 360 has streaming Netflix support built into the dashboard, both the PlayStation 3 and Wii currently require special discs to access the content. Analysts have speculated that this is due to Netflix's exclusivity agreement with Microsoft.

Netflix announced earlier this week that its subscription video library of movies and television shows will expand to Canada this fall as a streaming-only service. While the company has yet to explicitly mention console support, it did tell Shacknews that "it's fair to assume that several popular, brand name devices will be capable of streaming from Netflix to TVs at launch... and that we'll add to the family of devices over time."
