Morning Discussion

With Netflix streaming coming to Canada, I officially have one less thing to complain about in my day-to-day life. Sure, there are a host of unanswered questions -- the most obvious of which includes whether the service will extend to consoles -- but we're getting some hints that Canada will see similar features to the service as offered to Americans.

If the Zune Marketplace and PSN Video Store in Canada are any indication, Canadians won't see the same content pushed through their "Internet tubes" (this partially due to CRTC restrictions) but getting the service is a good start.

For those still waiting for Netflix to come to their country... I can only offer this.

Xav de Matos was previously a games journalist creating content at Shacknews.

I think you're much better off searching for natural cave formations than just digging down wherever you want. Sometimes there are huge networks of caves completely enclosed in the ground though, I'm not sure if you're equally likely to find them with random digging or if you should start in existing caves.

I agree. The second world I started in I found a cave system that has just kept going down, down down, down and I haven't had to dig much except to clear out blocks for a staircase to go all the way down.

There is (for me) a sense of geniune achievement when playing Minecraft that I don't seem to get from other games. Open world games are everywhere now, and I love playing them; but the houses I can inhabit and the things I can see are the same things everyone else gets. When I go back to my house in Minecraft I feel comforted in a way that other pretend video game houses don't make me feel; I built that house, and if it ever feels weird or I think of a way to make it better, I can rebuild it any way I see fit. I have weathered Creeper storms and killed pigs in that house, attempted to make a basement and fallen 50 blocks down into a pool of lava in that house, sworn for a solid hour about losing diamond equipment because who the fuck puts a lava pool under a flat plain in that house.

When (in Minecraft) I see a mountain made almost entirely of stone rising out a lake of molten lava, I can acknowledge that other people may have seen a similar thing, but my particular fuckawesome stonemountain has features that the others don't. Other mountains may have trees on top of them, or openings to massive, sprawling caves complexs, but those trees and winding cave systems aren't the same as the ones I encounter. I can explore these caves and have a wholly different experience than anyone else; I will encounter things no one else will ever see unless they walk into my caves.

I can (and have) stripped down entire mountains to ground level and five story mansions on top of them; I have dug into the earth and grown crops and trees in underground groves that sit in the middle of pools of fire; I have made railways system that cross rivers and dive under oceans, that connect entire fucking continents to each other, and none of the things I've seen or done or built are ever going to be experienced the same way by another player.

Ah fuck I was going somewhere with this but I forgot how I was going to end it.

I've found the best way is to find natural caves. First stockpile torches, carry a workbench/furnace with you and lots of poles. Just mine, mine, mine and follow the natural openings b/c those open spaces are where you have a higher % chance to spot stuff like iron, gold deposits. Setup 'checkpoints' with your workbench and furnace to fashion more iron pickaxes as you keep going.

Eventually you'll get so deep that I suggest clearing a big cube room and digging up while replacing your footing with cobble, planting torches you grab then replant up (like a primitive escape elevator straight upwards) until you surface. Mark that spot with a big monument of cobble and torches so you can come back, dig down, and resume.

Second day I went out and found some coal, then my spiral stair to the bed rock began. Made it all the way down, found a lot of iron on the way, also got some gold and diamond! Currently excavating vaults down by the bed rock, found my first lava. Tonight more digging!

I was using two of them very close to each other, and at some point I started referencing the outer circle rather than the inner one; when I finished digging, my triumphant return to the surface ended up with me panicking and trying to swim up against the current, because I surfaced in the fucking ocean.

Giving the most basic of instructions (since I went through it last night).

Hold down the left mouse button until you chop down some trees. Put those blocks into your inventories 2x2 crafting grid. Break the wood into 4-planks.

Use 4 planks to make a 3x3 crafting bench which you then deploy on the ground.

Right click on the deployed crafting bench to access the 3x3 crafting grid, then use 2 planks to make sticks.

Use planks + sticks to make pick axes. With those, you can mine everything up until you have to mine diamond, etc.

Oh, and to "make" things from the crafting grid. Drag the item out of the right hand picture box, down into your inventory. That actually creates the item.

You can also left click once on the item in the right hand box to pick it up, then keep left clicking to make more of it and pull it all into the stack on your cursor. Then you can click once in your inventory to store them all.

There are special stone ore blocks that when you mine them, instead of dropping a 'stone block', it drops that black stuff you can pick up.

It's coal, and it can be found in stone blocks that are studded with black spots. It's common at all depths (unlike iron, diamond and gold which become more common the deeper you dig).

It's not about Multiplayer/Singleplayer, what you played was Creative mode which is the free version of the game. Survival is the "real" game mode that's currently in development on the alpha build and will soon support multiplayer. Creative will be added to that build eventually as well.

i'm hooked! i did some sweet stuff today... I made a stone fort on a peninsula and made a harbor + moat the harbor has some boats docked in it along with some torches so I can find it at night when I'm on my way back. Sitting safe in my house at night waiting for day was boring so I started tunneling down for night time excavation operations... Eventually I fell like 10 blocks down after I broke a rock under me that had nothing under it. I landed in a sweet cavern that had an underground river in it! After digging some more I fell again this time into a cavern with a magma river! I built a bridge over the lava and continued on finally to strike it rich! I came upon another zombie infested cavern with a MOTHERLODE of gold, iron and coal. Cha ching!

You've convinced me to dig into a cave I know is close to my main stairs. I hear them, the zombies... making noise behind a thin paper wall. I have not seen their cave, but they are many. From mother Terra's fiery depths strike out at the fiends with glistening diamond cuts! Hopefully I find some mother load too!

I have a set of stairs at the back of my house that goes down to my middle minecart station & mine.
If you follow the tracks one way, it leads up and out to a hill station that you can ride down into the mines.
If you follow the tracks the other way, it takes you to monster infested caverns that are full of lava.
The mineride is scheduled to keep going through there and into even more riches... next step is to propagate some grass underground into a crazy grove.

Slash them with the sword and step back when you hear SSSSSSSSSS. If you can get far enough away from them, they won't explode. It's a proximity thing.

I've killed LOTS of those creepers just by slashing and moving backwards. Your effective attack range is a couple of spots in front of you with a sword.

You can play with your wife on Creative Multiplayer already. You can start a Creative Server and connect to it from any number of clients.

Speaking from experience hosting a server, I suspect you will be able to host a Survival server even if you do not have an account, which means you would only need 1 copy to connect to your own server. You would need to download the Server files, however, and run those.

The offline client is basically a single .exe file.

Pro tip: Stone spiral staircases are really fucking useful, because they don't blow up to creepers, and you can build them taller than the ground level, so when night ends, you can leave your cave more safely. What I do is put a storage container at the top of the spiral staircase, and store all rare materials from a night's quarry, then I work outside collecting wood and leveling my land

Also what is the name of that game that seems kind of similar and it had super stylized graphics and it was 100% procedurally generated and you could build bases with defenses and shit? It was going to be an MMO of sorts developed by one dude.

      • reply
        July 20, 2010 1:35 PM

Yeah, that's the same game. The not-very-deep thing you refer to is the Creative mode, where you can just go around and make stuff, no crafting, no health, no monsters, just building stuff.

What has been developed since then is a mode called Survival, where there's a day/night cycle, crafting, you actually have to perform actions to get blocks, like cutting down a tree with an ax you've crafted, or attacking monsters with a sword you made from iron ore you mined, or gathering wheat from tilled soil to make bread, or making a railway network with railroad tracks, or smelting sand to make glass.

It's impressive, and there are other things in development (what Notch, the developer, calls the InDev build) like an infinitely expansive world, MP survival mode, etc.

Make another! Trees are a renewable resource if you plant some saplings each time you chop one down (you need to manually plant the sapling in an open area for it to grow; just letting them fall from the leaf blocks as they disappear won't do it), so it's not any huge loss.

It's sold 660 copies in the last 24 hours, and this figure has been increasing rapidly for weeks. For a one-man indie operation this guy is pulling in some mad cash.

I am so hyped for the multiplayer mode. I made a visio spreadsheet called Minecraft Tech Tree for various player-made buildings. It had branches like "Defense", "Gathering", and "Transportation".

            I'm a nerd.

If I put lights in caves, will monsters stop spawning? I'm slowly exploring this huge series of caves but it's bloody dangerous down there.

They won't spawn in light areas. There's no guarantee you won't find them in existing dark places.

Yeah, they don't spawn in lit areas.

Remember, if you come to a fork in the cave. wall the side off you don't go down to avoid creepers behind you.

The cave is too big. I've lost all my equipment down some hole and I can't find my way back. I assume dropped equipment disappears if you restart the game? :(

No they didn't dissappear when i restarted but they are timed, you have to be quick.

      So where does everyone live?
      Here's mine so far: http://www.shackpics.com/files/towersunset_wq1e7ueauy0o23k6l37u.png
I built a huge 9 story tower on a hill near my spawn. There's a small hole on the 8th floor for where the minecart ride is going to start (the initial plan was to make a huge drop and then a short incline at the end and have it go hurtling off into the ocean, but I don't think minecarts work like that yet). I'm going to start excavating the hill under my tower and see if I come across any cool caves.

What's the difference between classic and alpha?

      • reply
        July 20, 2010 4:14 PM

Alpha is the on that autoupdates with new features. I guess classic is more along the lines of a demo.

Classic is more of a creative tech demo with no gameplay to speak of. Alpha will feature gameplay which includes crafting, exploration, and metagames.

the core mechanics are the same... ie: building stuff. But there is a TON more to the game with Survival mode.

No. Classic is a blank canvas where you wander around placing an infinite number of coloured blocks to effectively draw pixel art. Survival is a game where you wander an infinite procedurally generated landscape, finding caves, crafting items, fighting monsters and building things.

What kind of bars do I need to make mine cart tracks? And how do I make those bars?

      • reply
        July 20, 2010 4:37 PM

Iron bars. You have to mine iron (stone with orange-tan speckles) with a stone or better pickax then smelt it in a furnace.
