Alien Swarm Now Available for Free on PC
by Brian Leahy, Jul 19, 2010 5:14pm PDTAlien Swarm, a free game and SDK from Valve and the team that created the original Unreal Tournament 2K4 mod, has now been released via Steam.
The game supports four player co-op play along with 64 new Steam achievements, Steam Cloud support, and an updated Source SDK for mod-makers to dig in to. Though the Source engine has been ported to the Mac, Alien Swarm is currently only available for the PC. It is possible that it will be released for the Mac at a later date.
As this is a free game from Valve, there will likely be a lot of discussion about the title. Let's get this conversation started in the comments system.

Gives you XP from failed rounds.
Gameplay is pretty solid.
Hosting works well.
Dislikes:
The aliens. Some feel good but overall I'm disappointed with them.
Only one campaign to start with.

Here is something of mindblowing importance:
There is an in-game editor which can randomly generate missions.
In Steam Tools, install the Alien Swarm SDK.
Run the game as normal.
Activate the console.
Open it.
Type ‘SV_Cheats 1′
Type ‘ASW_tilegen’
There you go. One level editor. I just tested it. Without hyperbole, it took me three minutes to generate and compile a whole new level from scratch. And then I was playing it. And died really quickly because there were no bots to help me, but whatever, it WORKS.
I repeat: THIS GAME HAS A RANDOM MISSION GENERATOR AND IN-GAME EDITOR. The number of missions is officially infinite without ever touching Hammer. Have fun.

Also, Starship Troopers scenario remakes? Hehe.
Sure, it doesn't have an engrossing storyline and it may be difficult for people who are new to it to get the game without much of a gentle introduction, but still -- it's a super fun, well featured game. Having played Alien Swarm when it was a UT2004 mod, I'd have paid for this easily.

Now to wait for the modding community to release a custom campaign or two.
