Morning Discussion

A week of testing has passed and it appears our newest addition, the Daily Filter, has been given the nod from our community. There have only been a dozen or so comments on the feature throughout the week but I think the general idea behind it is being accepted.

Coming from a place that posts about 40 stories per day to Shacknews -- where we are far more selective in our coverage -- the editorial team here must be mindful of what (and how) we deliver content to our readers.

Every trailer and screenshot is important to us (that's why we place it in our database!) but in most cases we'd rather focus our attention on delivering the news than put it aside to look at a few pretty pictures.

Xav de Matos was previously a games journalist creating content at Shacknews.

to me it sounds like they wanted those modders to get some experience in working with Source and the result was good enough for a release but not good enough to warrant a 20-60 dollar price tag. (or of course it was planned to be release for free all the way)

whatever the reasoning, pretty sure they are now working on something bigger. I would guess the DOTA style game they are supposedly developing shares a lot of similar gameplay mechanics...

There's no way it's not good enough to warrant any kind of a price tag at all, I think they're releasing it for free as sort of a viral ad for the Source engine and its development tools. They're also releasing an enhanced SDK for free.

The 'price' is that you have to have Steam installed to play it. Once you have Steam installed they can directly market the Steam store and those products to you. This is why they gave Portal away for free with the Mac launch.

It looks like they are going to use it as a marketing tool for steamworks. They are releasing the source for the game and dev help/ SDK.

It's a platform marketing tool, and a good one at that.

          July 19, 2010 12:50 PM

this. I also suspect the game was developed so they now have the code in place with the source engine to handle a top down view and controls. Now they can move to the aforementioned dota game knowing the engine can handle that perspective.

The original was one of the best mods ever made for any game. It was an Unreal Tournament 2004 mod that featured a class based 4-player coop through various alien infested bases. It had RPG esque elements as well if I recall correctly, but more than that it was an intense and highly atmospheric strategic trek.

This latest release is a re-imaging on the Source engine, and it looks absolutely terrific.

As I understand it the original game was extremely difficult in part because it has really harsh friendly fire, so you need to be really precise if you're shooting around teammates. This one will have lower difficulties though.

Hey. I need a Steam Group to attach a server/servers to. This is looking A LOT like L4D2. Meaning no password for the servers, but they are locked to members of the steam group. The steam group will probably need to be private as we don't want anyone just joining.

Every once in a while I ran into a super difficult puzzle, but in most cases they were so straightforward that short of panic or just not paying attention they won't offer any challenge. Granted, I was also playing on normal difficulty so who knows? Perhaps it turns into variational calculus on the harder difficulties or something.
