Microsoft 'Cancels' 1 vs. 100 [Update]

[Update: 10:30am] The official press release regarding the cancellation of 1 vs. 100 can be found on Microsoft's Xbox 360 Press site.

[Original Story] Reports are circulating that Microsoft has officially canceled its Xbox Live-based game show 1 vs. 100. In its beta season, 1 vs. 100 surpassed over 114,000 users and became recognized as the Guinness World Record holder for the (very specific) category of "Online Console Gaming Service With The Most Users."

According to Videogamer, Microsoft Game Studios general manager Dave McCarthy said the following in regards to the cancellation:
When we started on this journey, we knew we were creating an entirely new genre of entertainment that would be a continually evolving concept. We're very proud of the 1 vs 100 team and their accomplishments, and are excited to apply what we've learned to future programming.

Videogamer also notes the team responsible for 1 vs. 100 will use the technology from the game to develop "new projects that will be unveiled in the future."

Presumably, the ability to poll live viewers during ESPN events on Xbox Live is part of the technology extracted from the development of 1 vs. 100. Shacknews has contacted Microsoft for further comment on the cancellation but has yet to hear back at the time of publishing.

I loved playing this during beta, although I have to admit it felt impossible to actually get into the crowd or become the one (which then allowed you to play for actual MS points and games). It was a great game to play with friends.

Agreed on all points. This is disappointing.

If someone like me can make it into the mob, anyone can, believe me. :)

I am VERY disapointed by this. I thought it was doing well.

But the point is that it was a beta and all of these (and other) issues could've been rectified over time. Disappointing.
