According to Eurogamer, the abrupt declaration is courtesy of a Comic-Con session listing which outlines plans to reveal the title during a special event. The listing for the July 24 event reads:

Spore received generally favorable reviews following its release in 2008. In early 2009, famed-developer (and Spore mastermind) Will Wright announced he would be leaving EA and Maxis to pursue other projects; soon afterwards the publishing giant laid-off an undisclosed amount of employees at Maxis.Spore has since been supported with various console and handheld spin-offs as well as two PC expansions.
