Morning Discussion
by Xav de Matos, Jul 09, 2010 5:00am PDTAs cool as features like Netflix streaming, Hulu Plus or even PSP Comics sound, I have no access to them. As a Canadian, I'm often left in the dark when it comes to video content. This is due to a few reasons, namely government regulations and restrictions as well as licensing issues. When I see more features that I can't access being injected in to home consoles, I wonder if I should just pack my things and drive an hour over the border where video content flows like Mr. PiBB (that's an American thing, right?). But every time I grab my luggage, I remember the whole "free health care" thing we have up here and put it all away. It would be nice to stream classic flicks and episodes of "The Wire" directly to my console, but it's just not in the cards for me, and many in other regions. I suppose it could be worse: I could live in a region that censors the games I play. (I feel for you folks.) If that happened in Canada, well allow me to just say, "Peace out, health care!"

Apple, Netflix and Hulu will duke this out and it will be awesome. The service that will win will do so because it's the most awesome in three key areas.
1. Selection. Currently, Netflix has old stuff, Hulu has new stuff, and Apple is somewhere in the middle. The winning service will allow to watch new episodes on the same day they air, and allow access to all back episodes for all shows.
2. Price. Apple is losing this one hard right now, and a .99 price point will help a little. But Hulu's $10 + ads seems to be the most reasonable for me. And Netflix is more expensive for streaming by a little, but no ads and awesome HD is worth it.
3. Portability. We need to easily get this on our TVs, our iPhones, our Droids, our laptops, our dick tracy video watches, etc. Netflix has great device support, with the 360, various blu ray players, and other devices people have already. Hulu looks like it's getting there, with 360/PS3 in the works. But Apple makes you buy an Apple TV or plug an Apple device's video out (AppleTV, iPhone, iPad or compter) into your TV. If they want to compete in this area, they need to have a software client that can be integrated into other devices, because an Apple TV dedicated box is a hard sell.
I think Apple is not winning any of these points, and they really need to kick some ass of they want to compete. Netflix and Hulu will continue to compete and innovate in different ways that we will all benefit from. I greatly look forward to the day where I deliver the bad news to Comcast to shove their shitty DVR box up their fat ugly ass.

My initial thought is (of course) that it would have to be Canada and the US. We're almost interchangeable with each other. I guess UK and Ireland might count, they seem to be getting along with each other now.

I have an office that is having trouble with the incoming audio on calls dropping out. The problem persists with multiple phones, multiple types of phones (including soft phones), multiple Cat5e cables, multiple switches, multiple routers, and the real kicker: multiple asterisk servers.
So, it has to be an internet issue, right? 15mb/3mb COX HSI connection with nothing else but the calls going on but still, it has to be an internet issue, right?
If I setup the phones to use another asterisk server, one that is across town (but also on COX), everything is fine. I can place two identical calls to Dell and hear the call in stereo. The one using the out of office asterisk server does fine. The one using the local asterisk server drops audio. (Both routing out to the same VoIP SIP Trunk, Flowroute).
This shit is giving me a headache. It makes no fucking sense. Two different types of servers, same fucking problem. Both use AMD CPUs but that shouldn't be a problem and I have an identical server somewhere else that is doing just fine and dandy.

Interestingly, the Singularity EULA has a "Program Utilities" and "New Game Materials" clause, so that would seem to suggest that mods would be permitted. I find that interesting, considering that Singularity's config file is a raw Unicode binary file that's checksummed on startup.

YouTube to support 4K video. This is pretty crazy. I can't imagine how slow they are going to load.

7-10 days, warm sunny location, either a resort or a nice hotel. We're not huge drinkers, so all inclusive resorts are kind of wasted on is. We loooove good food, snorkeling, surfing, hiking, and touring around interesting cities, etc. Value is important too as we're paying for it.
We really love Hawaii, but went there last vacation so that's out. I hated Cancun, it was so vapid and the Mexicans there just got on my nerves. We don't want to be trapped at a resort for a week solid, you can only play so much beach volleyball and do so much drinking in the pool. We'd like to be able to go out and do stuff. We backpacked through Europe for a month and it was amazing.
Thanks in advance!

LaForge's reaction: "Nice"
And I think there were two separate unrelated occasions where he got all creepy stalky on women he didn't know.
Is he intentionally creepy or am I reading too much into the character?

Which one of these mechanical robot slaves would you rather have fighting by your side in the middle of a battlefield?

Why is this? It seems like a mundane question, but I'm teaching myself this stuff, and I haven't had a tutor sit down with me for a few years.

I played it for a bit and it looks absolutely gorgeous and great in motion, a lot better than what in pics, Lucasarts have really outdone themselves this time, big thanks to them.
For anyone who's fan of a classic and still hasn't bought it yet, well you should do now as a sign of gratitude to lucasarts for the great job.

Not sure what happened but after finally digging up The Saboteur from my pile of shame & beating it I found myself still in the mood for another open-world game. I spotted Prototype & figured "what the hell".
I have no idea what happened but now I'm having a blast! I still think the intro is way to gravy handed in the way they throw so much stuff at you (weapons, info, characters, abilities, etc) and that the UI is poorly designed, but jumping around town, being stealthy & consuming guys and doing side mission stuff really is fun.
So hey, I was wrong and totally admit it here.
What about you guys? Any games you were Adamant about not liking and then had a change if heart? :)

First, some crappy pics of a nice 2011 Mustang GT Convertible:
http://www.getthefrakout.net/2011_GT/
The pics are bad, but the car is absolutely dead sexy. Amazingly nice, inside and out.
Secondly, a crappy pic of my car and the prospective replacement (mine is in the foreground):
http://www.getthefrakout.net/gt500/pair/IMG_0004.JPG
Got the loan arranged today, and plan on signing everything and trading keys tomorrow. In the middle of all this I get several cell calls from the dealership in my town asking why I was buying a GT500 from another dealership. That was pretty wtflol. How did they find out? Turns out they have one in sterling gray w/black stripes coming in later this month. The car specs are otherwise the same, as is the retail price. They ended up beating the price of the car I'm buying by over $1,500.
So, what to do. Bird in the hand or wait 2 weeks and get a better price? I'm going to try and beat the 1st dealership down with the written offer from the 2nd dealership in the morning. We'll see how that goes, but I think it will probably fly.

Hot DAMN they fucking nailed it. Badass ensemble of distinct characters, fantastic Predator design, great action scenes, sharp effects, just enough subtle references to the original without being retarded and ripping off the quotes like AvP 2 did, just enough of its own new ideas and Predator technology without over doing it, and plenty of scope for exploring more of what they've (re)established here. I also liked the two Predator factions, that's a great angle, how like one was slightly feral and bigger compared to the original movie Predators with the smoohter masks and skin.
If you ever remotely enjoyed the first Predator, go see this. It's easily the second best in the series, and that's only because the first one's unmoveable as the one that kicked it all off and is a classic of the era. Bravo to Rodriguez and Antal.
